Tomorrow I need to buy a new digital camera. I have read that Stanley St., in Central, is the best place to go. Is this correct ? Which is the best shop in Stanley St ? Finally, does anyone have a recommendation for a smaller/slimmer model with image stabilizatiion ?

I have found this forum v.handy in getting shopping tips (the Febreze from Gateway was easily located last week !). So, many thanks in anticpation of your replies.

I've had good experiences with Photo Scientific at No. 6 Stanley Street. Mr Poon, the shorter older gentleman there has given me great service. They are not always the cheapest in Stanley Street, but their after sales service has been very reliable in my experience.

For cheapest prices, you might try Mirama, further down Stanley Street, just over the hill and on the right. It's run by a bunch of young switched-on guys. I have no experience with their after-sales service, however.

As for a slim model, I would go for the Fuji F10 or F11. It doesn't have image stabilization, but it has exceptionally good image quality at high ISO settings like 800 - much better than it's competitors. The high ISO performance compensates for the lack of image stabilization.

Norichan,

many many thanks for the info - invaluable to an HK newbie. Is image stabilisation really that important for an amateur photgrapher who basically takes holiday snaps ?

I'll check out the Fuji's.

cheers,

You're welcome. And welcome to Hong Kong! Image stabilization is useful when you shoot in very low light, or when you shoot with a very long lens. In the case of low light, the shaking of the hands aat slow shutter speeds will cause image blur. Image stabilization allows one to get away with slower shutter speeds, within limits, but it doesn't help if the subject is moving. High ISO on the other hand, increaes the sensitivity of the camera to light, resulting in faster shutter speeds, and therefore less prone tp camera shake, and also helps freeze the movement of a moving subject. The downside of high ISO is an increase in image noise - a grainy appearance - but the Fuji F10 (or it's very recent upgrade, the F11) has relatively clean images even at high ISO. As for long lenses, the slim models don't have long lenses, so if it's really a slim model you want, the image stabilization for long lenses isn't really much of an issue.

Good luck.

Photo Sci are very good. Always an idea to walk Stanley St and check the other stores for prices - only takes a few mins as they are all within about 200 metres of each other. I've bought equipment from most of the stores on Stanley St at ome time or another and have generally been happy with their after sales service.
