Homeschooling in Hong Kong is illegal so it's doubtful there would be an active support group here.

It is not illegal to homeschool an international child in HK - many families do it to avoid the poor choices and high prices of the international and local education.

Have a look at this site for some leads on support groups http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/regional/Asia.htm

Hi, we homeschool in HK and have been for the past three years. There are a few of us, but unfortunately it's kind of word of mouth to find us! People say it is 'illegal' but that's not been my experience, the ed dept. were OK when I called them! How old are your children? Mine are 7 and 10.

Do you not recall the case of Dearing Leung and her father?

This case was tabled in Legco. The question and answer are available at:

Thanks Claire for that link! I do remember the case of Dearing, and it was interesting to read the EMB's official Q&A on it. I guess I feel fortunate that our 'valid reasons' for not sending our children to school were accepted by the EMB, because Hong Kong, in my opinion, is a fine place to homeschool. In fact, in many ways I feel it is far superior to what the EMB can provide my children. But that's another discussion for another day. :)

Hi browneyegirl. Sorry for replying so late. My girls are 5 years old and 20 months old. Does the group you meet up with an international group? Is your group opened for a newcomer to visit? Where do you normally meet? Thanks.

Hi Ling,

We're not really a 'group' like other groups are overseas, i.e. we don't co-op or anything like that, but we do get together usually once a week for fun and otherwise stay in touch by phone. I guess the reason is that we're all so busy with extracurricular activities! My children have a lot of friends who attend ps, so they're usually out in the afternoons at the playground with them, or else it's off to ballet, soccer, ping-pong, etc. In any case, we'd love to meet you! Are you in HK yet? Please email me, since it will be easier to communicate that way than through this forum, I think. Looking forward to hearing from you...susan.

Hi Susan. Thanks for your offer.I do not know your email. Please email me at joelingm@singnet.com.sg

Is your group consisting of Hong Kongers? If so, i may have difficulty, language wise. Although my husband can speak Cantonese, I can manage only extremely little. Where does the group meet? In 6 weeks time, I will be moving to Tung Chung area. By the way, what is 'ps'?

Thanks.

Ling, do you have another email? I tried emailing you at the address you gave but it was returned to me with the message "unknown user". BTW, 'ps' means public school, and we all speak English (or English and Cantonese, or English and Mandarin), so no worries! :)

Fanfare,

Homeschooling usually follows a curriculum from the country of your choosing - Canada, USA, Australia, UK so you don't need to be a trained teacher to create the curriculum as it has already been done for you.

If you are going to homeschool you need to look for one where there is loads of support -preferably online - from the teachers and the home school to help you in your role as in 'home supervisor' rather than teacher, some kids can't cope with home school (esp after being at a school and changing to having mum as the 'teacher') and it depends on your situation as to how much you can give to it - it is a full commitment for many years.

I tried it but couldn't do it with 1 child in Homeschool at age 5, then 3 children under her (one a newborn) in HK - no helper, life was too chaotic and homeschooling just couldn't be given the attention it demands/ requires (at that age anyway) and I am a trained teacher!

Now they are older, I still think life is too chaotic - 1 of my children could do it, but the others - well we have enough problems with the homework issues and conflicts - but from Ruth said - Homeschoolers do tend to be more independent and self starters and most, if they have followed a national curriculum and graduated will be able to attend university.

hi again - finally found this thread after wondering what in the world happened to the education "ask an expat" section. I even called asiaexpat but the guy who answered the phone had no idea what had happened! And here I was thinking the ed dept. was monitoring the site and had something to do with the demise of the 'education' section - LOL. I'd just like to add one thing - Read the books! There are so many great homeschooling books (available at the Central Library, even!) that take you step-by-step through what to expect. I took my two kids out of school and it did take a good full year to adjust. We loosely follow a curriculum and have them tested at the end of the year. Actually, we first tried 'school at home' with Calvert and had a really hard time following the 'schedule' they recommended. Then we found Sonlight and it's much more our style. You just need time to find what fits for both you AND your children. Good luck to anyone who is still interested in reading this thread!
