Yes it is true - and mayonaise (homemade) ice cream...many things. There are risks as with everything. Short of the WHO banning eggs and checking door to door that people aren't using them unless hardboiled...
Most commercially produced products would probably not use raw eggs though. Could be corrected on this.
I have a chicken farmer opposite me. I am more worried about him. He is right on a main road but nobody from the government seems worried about his free-range chickens. There is a public bus stop right near the fence - need we say more?
If one keeps less than 20 chicken, one doesn't not sem to fall within the regulations - weird is it not?

AA1..egg whites are used in traditional caesar salads mixed in with the dressing. doubt it's done that way here and i think they've stopped doing that in the states.
parents were advised years ago to stop their kids from eating things like homemade cookie dough that contained raw eggs.Cheesecakes are baked so you don't have to worry about the eggs that goes into it to make it.

eggs are used in some mayonaisses, bulk containers however have a different stabilizer in them (no need of eggs), our hotel does no longer produce in-house made mayonaisse for this reason (we stopped 3 yrs ago).
If a poultry product is cooked at 70c for 3 minutes (internal temp) or at 80c for 1 minute all virus cells are killed.
As for cheese cakes.... there's 2 types, cooked or not cooked.
The H5N1 virus has been found in frozen poultry in Japan that had been frozen for 2 years (this was back in 2003).
By the way, i was "lucky" enough to sit in a training for 3 hours on Monday, thats how I know.

I think carbonara is cream, bacon and mushrooms, Alfredo is with the eggs.

AA1 - if you don't want to risk getting a disease from eating eaw eggs then don't order anything containing them.
A famous brand name fast food chain will do lots of harm to your body if your eat some of their products - I choose not to eat it, but I don't think they should be banned because of it. Alcohol kills people so do cigarettes - people know it and still indulge, and what about puffer fish??Talk about instant death if it isn't prepared properly - I choose not to eat it - yet some people love to eat it - should it be banned??
I really think you need to get things into perspective with the N5H1 virus - the media again is doing a great job of wuppin everyone into a frenzy as they did with SARS, when the actual risk isn't very high. Yep - it may become a problem - but personal hygiene, eating right and looking after yourself will always be the answer - Flu's kill people, always have and always will.

I am not poo pooing the danger - I am just a realist. If people don't want to take the risks in contracting the bird flu through consumption of certain foods - then it is their responsibility to not eat it - it is not the governments responsibility or restaurants responsibility to ban foods that may, in the very slim chance have the flu inside it. Maybe the restaurant could indicate which foods are made from raw egg so that consumers can make informed choices - that is all that is required.
And I agree with Miss P - SARS was the best thing to happen to HK in terms of getting this place cleaned up and people to actually have some form of personal hygiene - but it all seems to be slipping back into the old practises. And of course the media are doing their darndest to 'report' and wind up everyone - and I only get the english version - I understand the chinese media are really giving it a good go - as they did with SARS...well at least the property prices have levelled out somewhat because they aren't telling everyone how high it is going to go (or should go)for the moment.

aren't people funny things......
ok, commercial mayonnaise doesn't use raw egg, they use STABILIZERS, hence in previous posts most restaurants/hotels now use commercial mayo, as a matter of fact, we are now also importing only US eggs to hong kong and not using HK/China produced.
Wash an egg???? read above, washing an egg does nothing, an egg is pourous, and it's come from a chicken, the same place it's cr@p comes from so it's in the egg already if the animal was infected.
3 mins cooking at 70c, 1 minute cooking at 80c, so if you don't mind eating an egg cooked for that long then fine... but i'll take mine sunny side up thanks, i don't like rubber.
Gotta love hong kong for it's paranoia.... i best join the club and call all the restaurants and then call the press so some people can lose jobs through lack of business thanks to the big hooplah that the press makes... hang on.... sounds like some people actually want to read this so there must be demand from some "people".
hmmmmmmmm, ignorance is bliss.... LOL
Oh, and by the way, bird flu has been around for alot longer than you think, the press hasn't.
So to sum it up, AA1, you'd best wrap your wee self up in coton wool and go back to bed.... whahhahah

My comment was on the reflection of what the media does to a small town like HK - they pick on something and it has a public reaction - SARS, property market, H5N1, harbourfest, just to name a few. It is a pity they don't get serious about the air pollution and start warning people about breathing too much - then everyone will hold their breath and they won't need to worry about bird flu anymore!
