Sorry Mod, but if its not MSG, it would be something else that's terrible for you. My mate worked for the McDonalds corporation and quit b/c he knew too much. That was enough for me to never eat there again.

i've also had the joy of working there, though aside from MSG i wonder what more freaky stuff they could do to essentially a bunch of leaves?

I guess anything would be "more freaky" than MSG which has not been proven to be harmful - in fact, evidence is mounting that it is not. Also, the idea of MSG being (or at least representing) a fifth “taste group” appears be gaining momentum in the scientific community (despite fervent opposition from certain “activists” who attack MSG and the like with almost religious zeal).

I suppose it's possible that genetically modified plants might be used, GM crops being something far more sinister than MSG. Presumably there's no legal obligation for any restaurant to print a warning label on its end product.

When people say Chinese food are greasy and unhealthy, I always wonder how bad these sausages and burgers are to us. I mean, how long has it been since the meat taken from an animal before we them in sausages and burgers. How much preservatives have been added to our food? I bet the answer would be pretty scary...

MSG comes in many forms. Simply reading a label and seeing it does not mention MSG directly does not mean the item is completely free of MSG. MSG does not have to be directly added to a food item - MSG can be produced during processing (such as in low-fat/skimmed milk).

ping - the answer is VERY scary...
Try to keep my family off preservatives etc - but you never know where stuff has been unless you kill it and cure it yourself.

agree with dimac4... I'm sure many people do not even realise MSG is found in most live vaccines.

mod 83: Does not look dodgy to me. To quote from the article you linked to:
"However, a considerable amount of research and testing into MSG allergies has been performed over the past few decades, and the vast majority of controlled studies show NO LINK AT ALL between glutamate in food and any allergic reaction." (my emphasis); and
"The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists monosodium glutamate as "generally recognized as safe", along with salt, vinegar, baking powder, and sodium tripolyphosphate."
Or directly from the FDA web-site:
"Glutamate itself is in many living things: It is found naturally in our bodies and in protein-containing foods, such as cheese, milk, meat, peas, and mushrooms."; and
"There is no scientific evidence that the levels of glutamate [...] has effects different from glutamate normally found in foods. "

Classic example of an Internet chain mail that is high on conjecture and low on facts. Note that the main assertions (MSG is addictive. MSG causes obesity.) are repeated ad nauseam but never actually substantiated. In fact, by actually bothering to read some of the studies with these "scary" titles, one can discover that they are pieces of research that test the hypothesis that MSG has certain harmful effects and, significantly, that they generally conclude that there is no scientific evidence to support this hypothesis.
Pretty much the only way that has been shown to consistently induced harmful effects through MSG is under highly specific conditions with doses of MSG far exceeding anything that could be consumed through a normal (or even super-sized for those who saw the movie) diet - and even then the MSG had to be injected directly. Even the healthiest substance would be harmful in such circumstances: Imagine injecting a quart of fresh wheatgrass juice into your left eye ball, repeated on a daily basis – I predict unpleasant results, so clearly wheatgrass juice is harmful and should be banned.
But getting off my high horse for a moment, I appreciate the concerns that people have expressed about wanting to eat healthy. And rightfully so - watching your diet is important, particular in this day and age where we all have such a wide range of consumption choices and face a multitude of, yes, temptations to indulge irresponsibly. Whether "healthy eating discipline" should be the responsibility of oneself or of the government can be debated (I lean toward the former as I believe the latter would not work, but I accept that other people might have different views). However, this debate should be an informed one and one that is based on facts and evidence and not on hear-say or speculation.
Fact is that aside from for a small group of people who are allergic/sensitive to MSG (and they exist – just like there are people or intolerant to shellfish, wheat, alcohol, etc.), the scientific evidence overwhelmingly concludes that there is no basis to support claims that the consumption of MSG is harmful or causes health problems.
