Does anyone have any experience with the two schools above ? We have the choice of sending our little one to one of these schools (ESF Kindergarten in Sheung Wan or Woodland Montessori in Repulse Bay). Besides the fact that the child might get priority for ESF primary school, is there any advantage of sending her to ESF Kindergarten instead of Woodland ?

The environment might be a little nicer at Woodland than ESF Sheung Wan.

I have to disagree with you there turtle1 the other way around in my opionion. Coutbas I would suggest you take a look yourself so you can decide.

Be advised that the ESF are reviewing school 'catchment' zones and entrance requitements at both primary and secondary level. At a meeting earlier this week an ESF official publicly stated that traditional ESF 'feeder schools' (non-ESF kindergartens and primary schools like Kellett) would no long be able to rely on direct access to ESF school places.
If you want to try and 'guarantee' your child a place at an ESF primary or econdary school you should have them in the ESF system ASAP.

To be honest, I haven't been to Woodlands at Repulse Bay but I have been to ESF Sheung Wan. I didn't like ESF Sheung Wan too much but obviously that's a personal decision. I agree with Pennypots that you should take a look at both schools and make a decision based on your own observations.

Once again I would advise you to look yourself as just looking at this tread you are given very wrong information eg. Mummy has said there are 50 in an ESF class - not a chance that is SO SO SO off the mark. Take a look and make up your own mind, having looked at nearly all the kindys I went with ESF. It really is a personal choice.

I doubt that ESF would get a licence to operate if that was the case Mummy - my point being that it is best to look rather than go on hearsay. I actually called the kindy and asked to have a look around before my child was accepted and they were most accommodating. I have to say that all of the parents in my childs class viewed the school prior to deciding on taking a place so do call them they will I am sure be most obliging.

My son went to ESF Tsing Yi a few years ago, unless the policy has changed, there is a maximum of 22 kids in the class with one teacher and 2 teaching assistants.

If you are really interested in comparing schools , esp kindergartens on educational grounds then a good placce to start might be the EMB website, under school profiles, where you can get a percentage of qualified teachers in each school...officially all teachers should be qulified since this school year only... but there are many still (ahem) 'getting qualified'. Also, check if the school is registered under the emb or under Social Welfare dept...if its SWD, then the teachers do not have to be qualified, as they are employed as 'child care workers'. The kindergarten business in hk is cut throat and. at times, pretty unethical, check facts such as these, & try not to be swayed too much by flashy advertisements, this just means that the school owner has enough cash for a flashy ad. and maybe a pr dept.. good luck!

We've looked at Woodland at Repulse Bay. Will definitely arrange to see ESF Kindergarten.
BTW, anyone have experience with both the Woodland in Repulse Bay and the Panda preschool in Chi Fu ? What would be the difference (besides the fact that one is Montessori and one is traditional) and is there a reason you prefer one over another ? We don't have a preference in the education approach. Traditional or Montessori is fine with us. Thanks.

Southside Kindergarten in Repulse Bay also has a good reputation and has traditionally been a 'feeder' for Bradbury School.

I must admit I have a little preference over Woodland because they have extended day program. However, I would like to get your view on that. Do you think there is any value to enroll the child in the extended day program vs. half day ?
