Aussies and Kiwis will know the above retail stores as cheap one-stop shops for just about everything ie. clothes, CDs, DVDs, household goods, sporting, toys, hardware, electronics etc etc. In the US, it's Walmart.
Is there an equivalent in HK? (Sogo doesn't seem quite it.)

I had a quick peek at Wing On the other day....but it was so packed, I didn't really hang around long enough to explore it. I'll give it another go this week.
Along the same lines, I was surprised not to have the mail box full of Store catalogues given the season. Haven't received a single one. I didn't think I would ever miss "junk mail".

There is no equivalent to Walmart etc... in HK.

Yeah, you will never see a hypermarket, supercenter, or large discount store in Hong Kong. Artificially high land prices and the lack of real competition will see to that. On the other hand, you can go into various neighborhoods in Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the NT and find pretty cheap prices for your basic shopping basket.

There is a shop in Sai Kung that the locals call K-mart or Harrods, it is about 1/10 the size of Kmart but manages to stock just about as much stuff without the clothing in it. Fabulous place for anything for your house or garden.Across the road, Opposite Standard Chartered bank.
There are other stores about HK like this but this one is just sooo good! And the store keepers are very friendly, helpful and speak great english!

Thank you all...particularly TC, ...point well noted. I sort of regretted making the post 5 mins after I made it for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
Dimac4...I will check out Sai Kung next weekend as was going there anyway for the beaches.
Speaking of beaches, I dropped by Big Wave Beach near Shek O on Sunday. If you haven't seen it...it's well worth the effort. Perhaps, one of the pleasant surprises TC was referring to.
cheers

You won't find anything as good as K-Mart of Big W here.
If you're after cheap toiletries and stuff (like I used to go to Big W for), then go to the local dispensaries. They haver everything and it's real cheap.
If you want gardening stuff, go to KK Horticulture just before Sai Kung (also will deliver).
If you want cheap clothing and towels, etc - then try Fa Yuen St in Mong Kok - heaps of cheap stuff that's kinda similar to Big W clothing (in my opinion).
I also think Jusco and those Japane Home Stores sell lots of small stuff that you need and is cheap (even heaters, kitchen stuff, you name it).
