OK, excuse my igorance. You may laugh, and the answer to these questions may be included in other threads, but as a complete technophobe, I need words of 1 syllable!
We have a laptop at home, that has wireless capability, but currently is connected to PCCW broadband by a cable. The main broadband connection ( for Now tv.& internet) is in the lounge, but the laptop plugs into a cable in the bedroom.
I understand that in order to be able to use the laptop elsewhere in the apartment I need to buy a wireless router.
Some questions:
a) what type do I need? I want to be able to use my laptop in various rooms?
b) where can I get one?
c) how much should I pay?
d) do I have to consider the distance b/w the main internet connection (in the lounge) or the cable the PC is connected to (in the bedroom)?
e) will we be able to have 2 x laptops connected to the internet wirelessly at the same time?
Apologies for the ignorance of these questions, but any help most appreciated!
Thanks.

a. Recommend a Linksys Wireless G
b. Wanchai Computer Centre
c. less than 400 for the new physically smaller model)
d. You plug your router into the PCCW modem. If the modem is in the lounge, it sounds like you then have a cable going to the bedroom. Router could also be plugged in there. If you have a choice of locations, where ever gives you the strongest signal throughout your home is best.
e. No problem to connect multiple computers. You will need to configure the router for PPPoE with your username and account so that multiple PC's can login. Not very difficult to do, and the linksys router comes with documentation (on CD) advising how to configure the router for PPPoE.
Hope this helps

Thanks a lot for your help. All that seems to make sense, except the PPPoE bit - what does that stand for/mean?

Oh, and where is Wanchai computer centre? Am assuming Wan Chai, but exact address would be v helpful.
Thanks

PPPoE (point to point protocol over ethernet) is a method of authenticating your account with PCCW. Basically, it allows you to connect to PCCW without having to type in your username and password everytime because it is done automatically for you.
PCCW normally only allows one PC to be connected per account at a time. By having your router authenticate for you (with PPPoE), you authenticate with the router, and both laptops will not need to authenticate. Only a single connection (the router) is seen by PCCW.
Wanchai Computer Centre is on Hennesy Road in Wanchai, adjacent to one of the Wanchai MTR exits (the exit beside McDonalds on Hennsey, if that helps).

Depreciation on a $400 router?
The used B speed mentioned is about 40% of the cost of a new Linksys G with warranty (and as ChinaDoll mentioned, linksys replaced her original linksys under warranty). Factor in time searching for a used one online, time running around picking it up, probable taxi costs as the seller likely doesn't live next to an MTR station, the fact it is used, it is 802.11b, and no warranty... is it worth the savings? Might be, might not be, depends on the buyer.
Many brands of routers around and we all have opinions on them, but my two linksys routers at home are working very well, and wireless signal can reach upsatirs while it couldn't with my SMC router. Used about a dozen linksys routers with a work conference last month and they all worked well.

OK, now it's all getting a bit too technical again!
Is Eagletec not that good then? I haven't had a chance to get to Wan Chai computer centre yet, but was in Broadway & saw one 1 for $399. What's the verdict on that?
