Any views on this issue apart from religious ones (boys' circumcision I mean, definitely not girls') eg: should or shouldn't, from what age, types of anaesthesia, recuperation/after care, own experience/stories heard first hand etc
Tks

My husband got it at the age of 13. In Korea, if you don't get it immediately after birth (I think within a week), they tell you to wait until the boy is a teenager. (again 13) One of my students was out for a week due to his circumcision (again he was also 13.)
Lots of research supports that it's not necessary in terms of hygiene issues, as it was once thought. As long as you move the foreskin back, and gently clean, an uncircumcised one is as hygenic as a circumcised one.
However - my husband said the most interesting thing to me when we were debating it for our next child (don't know if it is a boy or girl) He said, "I'd like it to look like mine."

I have a daughter but when I was pregnant and thinking of all sorts of things, I asked my obs about circumcision. My obstretrician, who happens to be the head of obstetrics in a major womens hospital in Australia said, unless I have religious reasons, then no to circumcision. The Aust stats for boys are 95% uncircumcised and 5% circumcised and these are mainly religious circumcisions. All the best.

Our baby boy was circumcised at 8 days old (we are Jewish). He had a check up 3 days later and it was healing well, and one week later it was fully healed.
He had baby parecetomal - two doses the day of the surgery, one dose the next morning - that was it. We had to keep vaseline and gauze on his willy for 3 days to be sure it did not 'stick' to his diaper.
The actual surgery was performed by a urologist.
I think as a very young baby is good - he won't remember it... although we will never forget it! I said to my husband it was the first time we were really 'parents' by taking the pain for our child.

If you do a search you should find a fairly heated debate about it from some time back. I know I posted some info from various medical authorities which may be of interest to you. Personally I am very anti circumcision and see no need for it.
Interestingly I don't buy the "so he looks like Dad" -it's not an original thought! My 5 year old hasn't even noticed that he isn't the same as his father and if he had I think we could deal with it and explain the issue with him.

I just did a search and the old thread is quite odd, much of the debate seems to have gone missing.

Remember, if you circumcise be prepared to buy a lot of hand cream when he is a teenager. (Cavaliers don't need it)

Why would you want to mutilate your new born child or teenager for that matter if there's no medical reason. As for religous resons we all know religion has been a source of great wrong and suffering for centuries. Don't you think the original design has worked ok for most

Circumcision is out of fashion now, it seems to come and go in cycles - certain decades almost all boys in USA and Australia were circumcised... then other decades almost none...
In Middle East boys are circumcised, and in most parts of Africa - it is the rest of the world that seems to be 'in' or 'out' of fashion on a cycle.
There pro and con lists I have seen are the same length (with medical reasons on both sides!), it is really a personal choice if there is no medical or religous or cultural reason to do so.
All I can share is our personal experience above... the choice is yours...

yaffle, thanks for the advice - i hadn't thought of that. going to buy stock in jergens or nivea now ;-)
we had our son circumcised during week 1. no religious reasons - we did it simply because dad is circumcised too. (the experience was almost identical to crj's first post.) the advantage is that my son doesn't remember it. however he did suffer vicariously through hearing the trials and tribulations of two of his mates - one Korean, one Taiwanese - who had it done the summer they turned 12/13. thanked me profusely for months afterwards for doing him when he was an infant! ;-)

Very interesting, as I had expected.
Johnmr - I do not wish to start a religious debate on this thread as I believe it (religion) is a very personal matter & everyone has & is entitled to their own beliefs, so lets not go there.
I just wanted to find out the (not many) possible reasons why parents opted for circumcision when not due to religion.
Yaffle - why the hand cream (or is this a stupid question ?)
Great Find - tks for the tip re: plastibell, will make more enquiries on this
I would like to get it done for my son but hubby doesn't (but leaves it up to me to decide) & am now in a dilemma as have missed the "1st week newborn" period which I heard was the best time to get it done (baby is now almost 1yr old). I have also made enquiries & was told that going under general anaesthetic is not advisable for children under 3, so that means that I have time yet to do my research & make my decision.
Personally, I would like to get it done as I think it's better aesthetically plus easier to take care of / clean (!) & won't smell as much ;) but hey, this is my personal opinion & is in no way meant to offend anyone...

Teenage boys wank a lot, cavaliers don't need lubrication, roundheads do.

Fair comment on religous debate must stop drinking through the week. You seriously don't see anything wrong with putting your child through an operation for aesthtic reasons. Does he need a nose job at the same time he'll never remember the pain and I'm sure it could look better

My husband wanted to have our son circumsised. All of the staff at the miserable hospital where I gave birth (durings SARS...I ended up giving birth back in the US at a small, rural hosptial...AAAGH!), pressured me to do this. However, I refused as there is no medical benefit for this painful procedure.

I guess the reason why we opted to have our son circumcised was because my dad and 2 brothers whom are not circumcised all have prostate issues. And since hubby is, just thought they all be the same. They used that plastic cap thing and it was a breeze. No ointments, no extra attention needed and it just came off after a week or 2. The only disturbing thing about the whole thing was when they came back after having done the chop they asked me if I wanted to keep the foreskin!!! haha! I said no and had to sign off on it and saw that quite a few parents who had it for their kid actually kept it.

We have a girl, but this issue came up several times in my preggy mums baby group. It can be a quite heated topic.
One thing that occurred to me though, is that pre-teens and teens probably don't care what their father looks like, but do want to look like their friends.
It's true about fashions. When I was growing up in the States, virtually all boys were circumcised and girls used to say they couldn't imagine having sex with someone who wasn't (hell on the uncircumcised boy's ego). That's changed since then and I've read the numbers are now more like 50/50 in the States. But my impression is that, except for religious reasons, virtually no one is circumcised in Australia, Europe and China.
So maybe it makes sense to also think about where you expect to be raising your teenager?
