I thought the Toto cotton knit blankets (which Matilda uses too) were perfect for swadeling our newbie.

Later, when she was still waking at night, I realized she might be getting cold, so I started putting socks on her feet and really watching the heat in her room.

i also use blankets made up of cotton, thought that might not be enough because she keeps waking up at night.what's the correct temp again?there's no such thing as wool blankets for them ,right?

This is interesting...

The books/websites I read seem to say the temp should be 16-20 C. I think this is way too cold (the books are mostly from UK), and we keep the room 20-22 C.

Also, you don't want the room or baby too warm due to SIDS (Sleeping on stomach, smoking and warm rooms, are all thought to be contributors to SIDS)

The midwife told us the baby should wear the same amount of clothing we wear at that temp.

In the day I have him in a diaper, onesie/t-shirt, sleep shirt with long sleeves and a cotton blanket on top.

In the night I have him in a diaper, onesie, swaddle blanket, and a cotton blanket on top.

You should not use a duvet with a baby.

He seems warm, but maybe I am wrong? Could that be why he cries sometimes? The socks seem like a good idea as if he is fussy and crying he kickes off his blanket!

I plan on putting my baby in a grobag and keeping the temperature around 20 C, the same as Crj does.

Also I'm thinking that with a grobag, I won't have to take covers off my baby when feeding in the middle of the night.

The sleep shirts I use are like gro-bags... definately something that gives easy access for the diaper - be it a zipper, snaps or a long elastic at the bottom!

At night we still swaddle, but I am absolutely useless at using a 'normal' blanket - I use special swaddling blankets with velcro!

Where do you buy your swaddling blankets from crj? I used normal blankets when I had my daughter all those years ago, but didn't know you can now buy special swaddling blankets. I am so out of touch!

My 2 cents worth.

I think the cellular blankets are the best (from Bumps to Babes, but I'm sure they are available elsewhere). These blankets tend to minimise the risk of suffocation.

Swaddling Blankets

I have two different brands, from USA.

1. The Amazing Miracle Blanket

http://www.miracleblanket.com/

USD 25

This is really impossible for them to escape from, but it is the most expensive and most complex to use. It might be coincidence, but he sleeps really well when we use this. If we bought this one first, I doubt I would have bought any other ones.

2. Kiddopatamus SwaddleMe

USD 10

This comes in 2 sizes and different fabrics. The small in fleece fits a newborn well but it too hot for HK, so we got the cotton/flannel instead. The fleece has a better fit though, so we use it more if it is a cool night or the A/C is on. He can escape, but not too easily! It is really easy to check his nappy and it fits with a car seat if needed. We bought this one first, and liked it but wanted to try others too.

There is also one called Swaddleaze (it has a zipper in the front)and is harder to escape from than SwaddleMe. There is another one by Safety First I saw in Bumps2Babes it is similar to SwaddleMe.

I ordered mine from Amazon in the USA, they are lifesavers for us as we couldn't get a blanket to stay on him no matter how we wrapped!

Saying all of that, a good tailor could make one for you...
