Those who make calls to the UK regularly...are there any cheap ways to call?
My current phone plan seems too expensive to make long phone calls...

I use a New World calling card which comes in both a prepaid and a monthly-billed version. It costs about HK$0.5 per minute to the UK. It is not the cheapest, but the connection is always crystal clear (unlike some of the VOIP cards). And chatting for an hour for two pounds fifty is a negligible expense compared with pretty much anything else in HK (the wine I drink during the conversation costs multiples of the phone charge!). The advantage of a card is that it costs nothing extra from my mobile, so I can kill time in taxis on the way home from work. Click on "24 hour flat rate" at:

I agree with Witley. I use 0060 as well and can't believe how cheap it is, even during peak time. My family never call me now as it is so much cheaper for me to call them.

If you want to call from your mobile, Peoples has a prepaid SIM card where all IDD calls to certain countries (I believe UK is included) for a flat rate of HK $0.25 per minute. Depends I guess on whether you're chatting, or need to talk to people in that country while you're on the road.

I buy the call & save calling cards a $50 card gives 165 mins calling time to UK.

Has anyone done a post-grad on why people care about "their" (whose?) egos on anonymous forums?

Howabout download Skype...all you then need are headphones with mike, & you pay thru a credit card in Euros...but it is pretty darn cheap..you can phone anyone, anywhere..sometimes theres a time lag which can be a pain, if you phone someone else who also has Skype, then it costs I think zero..I phone my son often (poor guy!) & as he has skype his end, its nil!
Look into it!

We use 1686 www.onetel.com.hk and you can see the rates.
UK Landline 0.55 per min
UK Mobile 1.99 per min
One nice thing is they can create an account for your land and mobile phones very quickly.
Also agree Skype, MSN, Yahoo are all good ways to call computer to computer.
Or you can try http://www.voipbuster.com, a few of our friends seem to be raving about this now, and say that the Euro 10 deposit is totally worth it. But we haven't bought it yet - just tried the free sample which was excellent quality.

HGC offers a flat fee of around $40 a month for calls to a number of countries, including UK (only landlines), from your registered mobile. I use it extensively for work and find the quality to be generally good.

Thanks for all the info, guys!
The HGC offer sounds amazing. Decided to try that out. The only hassel is that they require you to renew the contract every 3 months...weird.. Thanks, honky!
