are CT scans safe for infants?

anyone have any experience with CT scans and know whether they are safe for infants? My 1 yr old has been booked for a CT scan (by the paed in the hospital)due to a 'large head' size. I've seen 2 paeds and still feel very unsettled and scared to put my baby through it. Any advice out there?

My son is 18 monthes old and so far he has had three CT scans, the last one about 6 monthes ago. It is scary and to be truthful probably more traumatic for the parents then the child. They basically place a canula (for a drip) into the arm or leg and administer a sedative. After around 10-20 mins they go off to sleep and are taken for their scan. We were not allowed to accompany our son because of the high levels of radiation but he was in and out in about 10 minutes. Has your son had a normal sonogram? It's a lot less accurate but is usually the first stop for checking the size of the ventricals in the brain, especially for a very young child. Really though you shouldn't worry because it's all over very quickly and you know you're doing the best thing for your child.

His soft spot on the head has closed so the dr. has to go with the scan instead of the sonogram. Thanks though, for describing the procedure and the encouragement. I'm just wondering if there are any side effects of the radiation on such small beings? (the paranoid mother in me..)

My son has had three ct scans so far and yes I did worry about the levels of radiation, especially because they wouldn't allow his dad or I to accompany him. But if it was really too much then I guess the Dr's wouldn't advise anyone to have one, especially a small child. It really is over very quickly though and our son doesn't appear to have suffered any ill effect. All the best to you and your baby.
