If like me you avoid like the plague those 2 awful deathtrap roundabouts in Hang Hau and use the back route past the hospital and along to the large unused roundabout to get onto the TKO tunnel road, be advised that it is apparently not 70kmh but 50kmh.
I was stopped yesterday and had 3 penalty points for doing 67 as I thought it was 70. I asked where the 50kmh sign was and their response was because there was no 70kmh sign you must assume that it is the same speed as the road you just came from (which is 50). It's fair enough, however one of the exit slip roads off the tunnel road (just where they have their speed camera and 2 policemen) says "Speed ahead 50 kmh" on both sign and road paint which implies the main road must be 70 kmh????
Has anyone ever appealed against these things?

I have seen 1 unmarked police car, that was about a year ago and he stopped a dodgy driver, so they do exist.
About a month ago I was going towards the Shing Mun tunnel in the middle lane, I looked in the rear view mirror to see a Hiace van coming up behind going really fast. He was in the outside (fast) lane and there was a car also in that lane level with me. So he then cut accross middle (behind me) and went down the inside lane, overtook me and then weaved back across the front of me and went back to the outside lane in front of the other car. A police patrol bike saw this, went up alongside him and waved his finger at him through the door. We passed through the tunnel expecting to see that the van had been pulled over but of course both had gone their separate ways.

Talllatte - Same thing happened to our friend, both the ticket where you're describing AND on another occasion, seeing someone do some similar maneuvering of lanes near the $3 TKO toll; police man just flashed the lights and then gave a pointing. Unreal. Those traps in the 70 to unsigned 50 areas are questionable...and they're often towards the bottom of a hill. Not really fair practice but quite a money-maker.

I got a speeding ticket a few years ago, same thing I was doing 65 which I thought was under the speed limit of 70,on a duel carriageway. Was also told if there are no speed signs then its 50.

I noticed yesterday that the misleading "Ahead 50kmh" signs have now been covered up. I wonder if another motorist pointed this out to the police. It's just a money spinner that's all, as it serves no educational purpose whatsoever. Unmarked cars - or at least the threat of them should be used.

Good observation on the 50 down, 70 up, Oldhand. More and more confirming the suspicion of this being a $ racket. If they were to argue that it's 50 downhill for better safety, etc., etc., then post BIGGER signs.
As for "if there's no sign, it's 50", well what if you're just coming from a 70 area? What are you supposed to do, assume suddenly it's 50. So bogus.

The same thing happened to me in April, EXACTLY. I said the SAME thing to the officer, and he said the SAME thing back to me. I just told him to hurry up and let me get going, and I paid the fine. However, 2 days later, my husband got stopped for the exact same thing, and he already knew ahead of time so he was doing about just under 60..... and there was this car that was speeding totally in front of him so fast the officer couldn't stop him, so he stopped my husband's car. My husband debated with him, and basically said they don't have proof that it was him that was speeding. When he asked for proof, the officer actually was speechless. Then he said, " I am sorry sir, I am just doing my job, if you have to dispute this, you can take it to...etc. shows my husband the address and phone number..."
To make the long story short, my husband disputed it, and they wrote an apology letter saying they dismissed the case and ticket. Didn't have to pay it !

Same thing happened to me about 500m before the Choi Hung Interchange on Lung Cheung Road in the early hours of the morning. The guy said I was doing 71 in a 50, despite the fact that all the other cars were over-taking me! I had a look the next day in the daylight where I could see the 50 signs, but they are not clearly posted, and I aggree about the ramp exits that all say 50, leading you to think that the main road is 70. I have just writen to the Police HG pointing all these things out....hope I'm as lucky..

Always watch out for the taxis and minibuses if they are keeping to the speed limit you are guaranteed that the police are out!

The speed limit coming down from razor hill into Sai kung was 50km/h in the 'old' days before the over pass underbridge were set up - where to get to Sai Kung from CWB you had to come about 1/2 way up the hill (about where the police set themselves up) and do a U turn into the oncoming traffic that was coming down the hill - with pretty poor visibility. Also the turn into Sai Kung/ Hirams Hwy was really quite sharp. There had been some nasty crashes there and further up the hill - so the speed limit was understandable - but the traffic conditions have changed, 70 km/h down that hill would be quite feasible but the speed limit hasn't changed - obviously why the police sit there.
Another place which gets loads of revenue is the new Ma On Shan bypass - there are number of tricky places where speed limits are not clear, or change really fast in both directions. Police sit there and pick em off!
