Importing Secondhand Car to China

ORIGINAL POST

I want to import a second hand car (LHD) from the UK to China. I am from UK and have been residing in China for 6 years and Shanghai for the past 4 of those. I have heard various views on this subject already from being easy to very complex. I would like to hear from anyone who has first hand experience in doing this and who can give some reliable advice. Also if there are some definitive regulations on this subject or a recomended agent/contact/expert that has proven already to be reliable on doing this, any information I can follow up would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this helps at all but:

I have a friend who is doing import/export in Sz and about 2 years ago, he approached me about doing exactly what you are doing (for profit) for used cars from the US. Specially used luxury cars that is hard to find here (the Tariffs on new ones made it out of reach from the get go). After months of research and meeting with people from the customs office from both countries, his conclusions were:

If you go to through the proper channels, it would not be ecomically feasible.

It is possible to pay the right people off (bribes) and get the car into the country, but you can't get it legally registered in China, so if you ever get stopped....big deal.

There were quite a few "brokers" who promised that they could get it here, but after meeting with them, his conclusions were that they were all scam artists.

The reason, I started to read the thread was that I was also interested in seeing if anyone had done it so that we could resurrect our project if someone else did it. So I will keep reading to see if anyone else had a good experience.

I am lawyer admitted in China. Hope my advice can give you some idea. First, you may import second-hand car to China for use or for sale. Second, you must clear the customs before you can have them registered or used legally in China. Third, when you are clearing the customs, you need to pay the following taxes, i.e., custom duty, excise, tax for importing-car-for-use, VAT. Thus for a legal use of the car imported, you need to pay too much tax, which may be higher than a car bought in car. For further info, please do not hesitate to contact artlawlee@yahoo.com.cn.
