we are currently looking at buying a Sharp LCD TV and will plan to take it back to Australia. From what I can establish from talking to the shops here the only difference is the model number ends in a different letter in HKG than in Aust and it would not be covered by the Sharp warranty but appart from that its will work fine down under.
For piece of mind before we buy would like to hear from anyone that may have had some experience or knowledge if it will work ok down under.

Yes - both countries use the PAL system (rather than the NTSC system used in the US etc). But when you get it to Oz, go into the "set up" menu and choose "restore factory settings" and then work your way through the set up menu to choose Oz as the country: this will help it to find the right frequencies for local terrestrial TV.

the ones in HK might even be a "multi" system, which means you can even go to a NTSC system country and it will still work. i know at least some brands have a multi system for their tvs.

You may not have warranty; but i would also do the same (buy here, and bring). Little chance something will happen during warranty.. (i assume the price difference makes it worth risk).
I am not sure however i would choose Sharp though; they are the best LCD TVs, but at a premium. What size are you looking at ?. Technology for LCD is moving quick now with all looking to High Definition so prices and specifications changing fast; may be worth to go for something cheaper meanwhile. Just my 2 cents, even though you did not ask ;)

If you want the best, you get Sharp. If you're going to wait for 'newer technology' you might as well not get a TV at all - you'll keep waiting and waiting, because there is always something around the corner.
So if you want to buy a good TV TODAY, then it's Sharp, or a decent brand that uses Sharp panels, like Hitachi. Sony has nice LCD's too.
Avoid stores like Broadway and Fortress... Check out an A/V mall, like the one in Mong Kok (just outside exit D, above Cafe de Coral.
Careful though, some of the salesmen there are pretty sneaky... Not that they'll rip you off, but that they might make you buy something that isn't necessarily the best deal.

Just curious - is it significantly cheaper to buy them in HK than in Australia?

autralia prices should be pretty low. actually, hk prices are not that cheap, even without the sales tax.

Would a TV from HK work in France?

Yes; Sharp is best at LCD; no question about it. But there is a certain break point for everyone; and if you feel it is really worth it to pay a premium for the best. (dont get me wrong; im a freak and buy all the latest gadgets; incl. Plasma, Projector etc :)
For example; you can get a 27 LCD for around 5k HKD. So you can get 3 or 4 for your place in Australia. OK, they wont be as good as the Sharp but the competitors are getting better so its not a static race. You might think it is good enough; and save 15-20k.
Trust your own eyes and wallet; go and see for yourself. And, if youre looking at spending 20-25k; consider also Plasma, which may be an option depending on how you will use it. (And you could for same price as that Sharp get a 42 by for example Panasonic).
Example of LCD for 5k here...
