I've always used a pulmonizer for my son. Steam from that always works as a natural decongestant.

Nice long hot baths before bed time and a little vapour rub (Vicks) on the chest and neck. Tends to soothe my kids and they sleep much better. But if your baby is really young (below 1) I do not recommend you to use the vapour rub on his body directly. You can rub a little on his/her clothes instead.

sorry, its actually called a nebulizer. Normally used to dispense asthma medication but can also be used for steam.

There is a brand called Pulmo-Mist which has a portable version very similar as the Omron one shown in the link

Also these days you can get cold air steamers (safer than hot air). I still have the old hot air type, it really makes a difference when the kids have colds.

You may also find some saline nasal drops help.

Chop an onion (it should make you cry when you cut it) and either place in in a muslin cloth and tie it to the bed or put it on a plate near or under the bed. Everything will stink of onions in the morning, but it makes the breathing much easier. This is especially helpful if your baby sleeps with a dummy as they can't breath through the mouth with a dummy in.

I swear by this!

Good luck.

Actually Vicks makes a vapour rub for babies now..."Vicks Babyrub"(for babies 3mth and up). Not sure if they sell it here in hkg. I go mine in the States.

Another product I love love love is called Ayr

They have Ayr for adults & another for babies/kids.

I ALWAYS carry this with me when I fly. The minute I feel congested or stuffy & get that feeling like I can't breath, I just rub a little in each nostril & it clears my air passages ASAP, and with no odor!

Again, I bought it in the States, so I'm not sure if it's sold here.

Ayr is sold here and it's great for adults and kids, I have the spray version, really helps with congestion caused by the pollution here too. As for cold relief I would highly recommend baby balsm by vicks - it's a milder version of vapour rub and is especially formulated for babies with lavender etc. I rub it on my baby's back and chest. I'm sure it would be sold here (haven't looked as I brought a big tub over from Oz) in chemists or bumps to babes....

Depending on the child's age, I recommend garlic, lemon/lime tea...you can add a spoon full of honey to give a sweet taste. You put 2 garlic heads (smash it a little, but not much) and half a lemon/lime slice (if small you can add more slices)into a pan and approx. 2 cups of water and let boil then turn off burner and add honey when in the cup. Drink it still warm-hot. The child will start to sweat and this sweat will decongest and fever, if present, go down. It works greatly for me! You can also add a mint leaf to it. ps - the child might not like the smell and taste of it (very garlicky) but it'll do very good. If anything ask your doctor about it.
