I am really missing the outdoor life adn would like to go camping somewhere in hong kong. Does anybody know wher eis safe as i have heard lots of stories about gypies attacking people in tents. Also somewhere that we can get to without a car. Don't mind hiking.

Four suggestions:

1. Lots of people camp on Tap Mun Chau (aka Grass Island), a beautiful ferry ride from Ma Liu Shui pier, which is near University KCR. Several small shops for provisions as you leave the ferry in Tap Mun.

One camping place on a hilltop there is within earshot of the Police post, so it should be pretty safe - except for the wild cows! Seriously, don't worry too much about safety: some locals get rural crime out of any sensible perspective ... 21,900 people were injured in traffic accidents in HK last year compared with, maybe, 3 injured campers.

The Ma Liu Shui - Tap Mun ferry is a daily service operating via Sham Chung and Lai Chi Chong. The timetable and fares are as follows:

Mondays to Fridays:

From Ma Liu Shui - 8.30 am and 3 pm

From Tap Mun - 11.10 am and 5.20 pm

-------------

Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays:

From Ma Liu Shui - 8.30am, 12.30 pm and 3 pm

From Tap Mun - 11.10 am, 1.45 pm and 5.30 pm

Fare: Mondays to Fridays - $16

Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays - $25

2. More remote (take provisions!) is Po Toi island. No sane "gypsy" or II would think of looking for people to rob there! The ferry schedule (from Stanley and/or Aberdeen) is pretty haphazard - you would need a Cantonese speaker to check with them at 2554 4059.

3. At Sham Chung (a stop on the Tap Mun ferry) you can camp in the field. Simple provisions available. Go now while stocks last, as developers apparently have their eye on this (one of the most beautiful low lying areas in HK). You can see a JCB in the background of this photo:

4. Only the hardiest muggers would venture to the cabins atop the Lantau mountains:

Actually you can use the campsite in Pui O without going as part of an organised group. It's free, totally safe for children and has a small shop with all the neccessary provisions. Treasure Island runs a restaurant there called Ooh La La and you don't need to be part of Traesure Island to use it. There are also local restaurants in Pui O village that are only a short walk away.
