Unwaxed lemons

Can I buy unwaxed lemons anywhere? Or is there a way to clean off the wax from lemons? Lemon zest is used so often in cooking as well as baking that I want to make sure that my guests or myself won't die from eating wax : ) One more question: which is the best tool for zesting lemon? I find that when I use a grater the zest stick to the grater and it's hard to get the zest off.

Olivers has organic (therefore unwaxed) lemons - packs of 4 on a high refrigerated shelf near the veg.

Buy a lemon zester - basement of Wing On dept store in Sheung Wan with the other kitchen tools.

I always thought the pesticides in the lemon rind were harmful. Does anyone know whether you can get rid of these (and the wax) by just scrubbing ordinary lemons very well? The organic ones at Great are soooo expensive! Something like 60HKD for 4...

Really? I thought organic ones were grown without pesticides.

mango1, are you serious? Wax is good for your skin? Can you give us some medical reports proving that?

Why not just dip the lemons in hot or just off the boil water. This would melt the wax off the lemons. Do not soak them just dip them and then take them out.

Sante, the "wax" on the lemon peel is not harmful (see below). You would probably have to eat 5 kgs of lemon zest in one go to just get an upset stomach.

Cheers and happy cooking.

Uses

Candlemaking

Coatings for waxed paper or cloth.

Coating for many kinds of hard cheese, like Edam cheese.

As anticaking-, moisture repellent- and dustbinding coatings for fertilizers.

Preparing specimens for histology.

Solid propellant for hybrid rockets

Sealing jars, cans, and bottles

In dermatology, as an emollient (moisturiser)

Surfing, for grip on surfboards as a component of surfwax.

The primary component of glide wax, used on skis and snowboards.

As a food additive, a glazing agent with E number E905

The paraffin test is used in forensics to detect granules of gunpowder in the hand of a shooting suspect.

A fire performance fuel

Food-grade paraffin wax is used in some candies to make them look shiny. Although edible, it is nondigestible; it passes right through the body without being broken down. Non-food grade paraffin wax can contain oils and other impurities which may be toxic or harmful.

Impure mixtures of mostly paraffin wax are used in wax baths for beauty and therapy purposes.

Paraffin wax is not used much to make original models for casting, as it is relatively brittle at room temperature and usually cannot be cold-carved without excessive chipping and breaking. Soft, pliable waxes such as beeswax are preferred for modelling.

Burgundy, bob the builder, balu1 hk, thank you all for your advice/info.

bluepoppy6, is this the one you're using?

How different is it from a normal grater?

Yes that's the one. It gets the zest off within taking the bitter white stuff - pith? -- with it, as often happens with normal graters. Very sharp, and also excellent with cheese etc.

I got it as a gift but I've seen it sold in several HK stores...
