Canadian Int vs ESF schools

ORIGINAL POST

Our children are due to start primary school soon, and we are interested in any families that have kids at the Canadian Int school or Quarry Bay ESF giving us some feedback on these schools. Is there any problem with the very early start at the Canadian School? Any advice/opinions appreciated.

My Children go to Canadian Int'l. Like many expats, schooling was one of the big issues here for us. After touring the majority of schools and learning of their curriculum we chose Canadian International as we felt that they offered a little more for our children. We cannot be happier with our choice, the school is fantastic, as a parent you are always welcomed and staff, Head Master and all are always happy to see you. We also looked at the ESF schools (Kennedy and Glenealy to be exact) which we know people who attend also love, but at the end Canadian offered a bit more with a lower teacher to children ratio and their school just really has the feeling of being on a campus. I say, take the tour and ask all the questions. At the end both schools are good but it all depends on what you want for your children and how much you are willing to pay. Also a big decision maker will be availability of space...Get them on those waiting lists.

Good Luck.

Tangerine has a good point, I think you should choose the curriculum that you see fit for your children. We are not Canadian nor are a lot of the students that attend CDNIS nor are all the students that go to ESF from the UK. Whatever school you choose for your children most school will tell you the majority of kids that return to their home country do not have a problem transitioning back into their local school. For the most part, most of the students are ahead when they return. So again, take the tours and ask lots of questions and get them on the list.

I am not too concerned re curriculum at the primary school level (we plan to be home for highschool.) I was educated in the USA, British and Australian systems as my parents did the expat thing and I had no problems changing. I got into the Uni course of my choice so I don't think it adversely affected me! Facilities, teaching standards and happiness of students are more important to us. We are also keen for the children to have alot of exposure to MAndarin.

Anyone have anything to say about Quarry Bay??

I have only heard good reports about it. The two schools are somewhat far apart so that is something you may need to consider - how long do you want your children to travel to school in the mornings - I would suggest that you take a look at both schools and take your children with you - you can then get a better feel for the schools. You do realise that the choice may not be yours - schools here are FULL with very long wait lists so initially you may have to take a place where you can find one. Good Luck!

Are you in Hong kong? Why don't you phone the schools and organise to have a tour of them. I'm sure you'll get a "feel" for the one that is better suited to you.
