If you're going to be working and pumping then you want something electric so you can do it hands-free. I used the Medela PIS, but if you get that, make sure you get some extra 'membranes'at the same time (little white plastic bits - tiny and cheap but they need replacing, and you might as well have a couple of sets of spares in - they come with a spare set, but you'll never be able to find them when you need them). The pump was good, easy to use, and fairly quick (15 mins maybe, for both sides).

If you're not working and just want to pump occasionally then you could try the Avent Isis - it's manual, easy to use (after a bit of practice) and really effective - I used to use that one first thing in the morning, sitting up in bed and reading, but I wouldn't have been able to pump for a year at work with it. But a very good pump. That one cost $50 second hand from this site - the Medela cost $4000!

I pumped manually every day (twice per day and then once per day) for more than 6 months with the ISIS avent one and it was really fine..

and as i was pumping in my workplace, i didn't want anything electric.. you need where to get the plug.. and make sure that it doesn't make a noise..

if you are unsure, maybe can you rent a medela first..

Geiboyi -

where did you get your Medela PIS from?

I have both an Avent, handheld ISIS and an Ameda Purely yours. I do like the Ameda a lot because of it's ease of cleaning. The milk never passes through any hoses so there is little to no chance of contamination or bacterial growth within the pump itself.

Is the PIS too bulky to carry to work everyday?

travelling with the pump to work daily will be my dilemma!

I bought my Medela PIS from Bumps to Babes for $4000. This is an outrageous mark up from the UK/US price, so if there's any way you can get one from there you would save a lot (they were out of stock everywhere in the UK when I wanted one though, and so in the end I had no choice).

You can leave the machine part of the pump at work and just take home the milk in the little cool bag (comes with the pump), also the plastic bits for sterilising (something you will probably become less concerned with in time...). It means a bigger bag than before, probably, but then you need to accept that with a baby the days of small cute handbags are over...

I use the Avent double electric pump. It's wonderful and comes in a padded black carry bag. I bought thru the Avent website for $700.00 Aussie dollas. It takes me 15mins to pump out 240mls (from both breasts) I love it and for me as i express fulltime it was worth every dollar.

For work you really should get an electric pump -you'll be spending an hour a day pumping so it's nice to be able to work (by which I mean play on the internet) at the same time. You will need to buy a pumping bra or cut a couple of holes in a normal bra to make it hands-free, but it makes a big difference.

(Of course you need to have somewhere sensible/convenient/appropriate to pump - if you're stuck in the bathroom you're never going to do very well whatever pump you choose. My boss is a complete witch and still sees no need in providing anywhere suitable, so this time I'll probably end up doing it in the middle of the office. Whatever. )

If that is your situation at work and you have to pump in the bathroom Avent have a single battery/electic pump also. I hope your situation will be nicer than that not much fun spending your precious break time in the loos pumping!

I rent the Medela Symphony hospital grade pump - I can't recommend it enough for home use.

Then supplement with something more portable for travel - or rent two one for home and one for office.

I get more milk, faster and more comfortable than the other pumps.

Good luck!

And it the loos are the only place to pump then this is wrong, and if you're up to it you should make a fuss. Finally HK has some laws regarding family status discrimination (not that I'm suggesting resorting to legal action - as if a new mother is up to that) and I think employers should start to realise that they have to provide facilities for nursing mothers. In China, despite many other appalling policies with regards to having children, breastfeeding mothers must be given paid time off to travel home, nurse, and come back to work, or they can have their babies brought to them at work. Of course I realise this means that loads of women get fired the second they get pregnant, but still, it's something.

My boss is single and childless and it is my children that will be paying taxes when she is retired. She can find me somewhere nice to pump, if she puts her mind to it.

my friend pumps at the fire escape stairwell, where her other colleagues take their smoke breaks....how pleasant. will it kill companies to provide a nice private corner in the staff lounge or something for mummies to do pumping?

I work from home b/c there is no place for me to pump in office.

Now they want me to go back half days - but I will still need to pump once.

I am fighting it until we drop the 10am feed, and then I can go in 1/2 days.

My colleague was offered the smallest conference room (lockable form the inside) with black out curtains every day for an hour for 3.5 months for pumping upon her return to the office after maternity leave. We all felt very proud of our management team for doing this - I mean she used her lunch hour anyway and just made sure she brought a packed lunch and her work quality never suffered. She uses the Avent IQ Duo electric pump, bought overseas since apparently it is impossible to get in Hong Kong... I hope to do the same when I return to work after I have our baby!

I'm sure they will find me somewhere - I work for a company that has had some very bad press in the past about breastfeeding - but really these days we shouldn't have to be relying on other people's offices/meeting rooms, but companies of a certain size should be obliged to provide an appropriate facility, same as they need to provide washrooms etc for their staff. It needn't be big, but pumping is a pain, and by doing it we are contributing to society by having healthier babies and we should be supported more. OK, rant over...

Very nice of your supervisor. I do suspect that many mothers are afraid to ask, and in a perfect world they shouldn't really have to.
