We will be moving to HK in Sep, I have a 5 year old who is currently attending a Montessori school. We are considering putting him in Woodland Pre-school in Wanchai Vs Singapore International School, does anyone has any experience or feedback on SIS?

Thank You,

Jas

SIS follows the singaporean syllabus and has almost only Asian children, a mix of Singaporeans, locals, Mainland Chinese and other asian nationalities. They have an excellent Mandarin programme with the school being bilingual; Chinese and English. It is more exam based than ESF or other international schools with exams once a year for lower and twice a year for upper primary. Teachers are a mix of Mainland Chinese, Singaporean and Westerners. They don't have a secondary school although this is being planned and it's worth considering as once you start in a school it is easier to follow it through rather than chop and change.

Hope that helps

You may want to consider your childs education in the long term before you make a decision. If you are in HK for the short term and only require a primary education, both the above schools may suit you. If you are here for the long term, you may want to think very carefully about choosing a school that does not offer your child a high school education. School places are very limited and to transfer your child into an alternative school for high school education will be near impossible, particularly for years 7 & 8. Good luck.

The other point to bear in mind is that SIS is one of the very few (maybe the only one in HK) that teaches simplied Chinese characters. Truthfully I have no clue why the rest of HK does not follow this. Afterall this is what mainland China uses.

Actually I agree, I've call up many kindergartens previously and the result is, even if they teach PuDongHua but the written is traditional chinese character and this is something that I still cannot reconcile with :( If people wants to learn PuDongHua or Mandarin, then naturally we'll like to learn the simplified chinese character that China is using right?

Maybe some Chinese teacher can shed some light on this forum....to clear my doubts.
