Hi
Our baby is almost 8 months.
He is still breast feeding 6x day and on 3 'meals'. He is also under the 10% and very very active (crawls all over flat and jumps up and down even while sitting!) - so we are trying to do anything we can to increase his calorie intake.
We have been mixing yogurt in with his 'breakfast'. Both for the calories and calcium and other benefits.
Breakfast is usually mixed grains (oatmeal, barley, millet, brown rice), breast milk, fruit (papaya or mango) and yogurt.
If he finishes the whole 175-200 ml, we will give him additional yogurt, fruit and breast milk. He will often gobble down an additional 100 or so ml.
Since it is easy to mix the extra yogurt, if he finishes his lunch or dinner and is still hungry, we give him the yogurt and fruit for dessert too. He even eats it cold!
We use YeoValley Plain, No sugar.
The container is 500g
In one week, we finish an entire 500g container - he eats that much!
He seems to love it, he is very active and bright and alert, and digests his food well - never spits up or is constipated or has runny poo.
QUESTION: Is there such a thing as too much yogurt?

Hi Ellie - I am super lazy about the grains... I did make my own a couple of times, but I find it much much easier to buy Earth's Best Whole Grain Mixed Grain Cereal.
1. There is not enough room in my freezer for more 'food cubes'! (my husband has not had ice in his drinks for ages)
2. It is fortified with iron
3. It is just so easy (this is the real reason!!)

best friend is Indian - watched her feeding her child. Her baby had yogurt with every meal (normal in her family) and didn't have any problems. Most people point out that yogurt is VERY good for digestion given all the probiotics and whatnot in it. If your baby is fine (poo and energy wise)- I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Thanks HKCC - just seemed that 500g a week was a lot, so I should check :)

CRJ - both my kids loved yoghurt as babies (and still do now). We used the Petit Miam baby yoghurt for 6mths plus (I think 100g per tub). It had no suger but some fruit puree (available here at some Wellcomes and Park n Shop). Both my kids ate 1 tub per day (at least) from about 6-7mths on. They still eat lots of yoghurt but I avoid any with suger in it.

Thanks AM - at 100g per tub, your babies must have been eating about the same as mine *phew* Yours are older now, good to hear they still eat it.
Isn't it a great baby food? - already smooth, can mix with anything, no sugar and he eats it warm or cold...

crj, I see that you are based in Beijing. I'm also here with my 7-month old baby boy, and was wondering where you can get baby yoghurts here. I've started to give my baby organice no-sugar yoghurt from Green Yard but he doesn't seem to like it much. Was wondering what brand your kids like best.

I don't see a problem. Our younger one has eaten 1 tub of Petit Miam a day from about 9 months. That's over 500g I think. Also eats 2 meals of "solids" (chicken, risotto, fish fruit, etc...) + breastmilk + porridge + drinks water...
If your baby is fine otherwise I wouldn't worry. Typically the problem is getting them enough dairy.

EARS -
Funny you should say that.... our second baby (11 months now) has never taken to the Greenyard Organic Yogurt... I also get the 'no sugar' yogurt from LoHao/JennyLou that comes in a tub with a white and black label.... this one is thick set, my son (25 months) likes that one more. But we still get both, and I mix the greenyard organic into the baby food, but she doesn't take it on it's own like our son did.
My husband and I were just talking about how our baby eats less yogurt and we think it is the different taste and texture - it is a lot more 'sour' isn't it??
So called 'baby yogurt' is just a marketing scam (often with addititves too!), so just try the other no sugar one here and see if that is better for your baby.

how funny! i wanted to post the exact same question about "too much yohgurt?" my baby has a petit miam every day and sometimes even two!!!.... so i was wondering whether that was too much. but seems not. :)

There are good brands and bad brands of baby yogurt. Certainly in the US the only full fat yogurt in most stores is "baby yogurt". Also the French stuff is delicious.

we were never too successful with natural or greek plain yoghurt no matter how much delicious fresh fruits we added into it.
so we started giving petit miam, which was abit more successful but not like he was super addicted to it. and since i felt there was quite alot of sugar in it, i didn't give it every day and now i don't bother anymore...can't remember the last time he had any!!

does petit miam have alot of sugar in it??? like added sugar? what about that other baby yoghurt you can get from the supermarket (in HK). i think it's yoplait too. alot of sugar? what yoghurt with no sugar can you get in HK?

There has to be a compromise. No sugar and baby might not eat it at all.

In HK, I used to get YeoValley and Horizon.
We also used to get this Australian brand of greek and creamy yogurt, but I forgot the name - it was cheaper, also plain, full fat, no sugar.
Both full fat, plain yogurt, no added sugars.
Yogurt does have natural sugars, but you can't do much about that :)
My toddler is 2 years and 2 months and never has had anything with added sugar, only natural sugars that are in fruits, yogurt, etc... and he eats a huge variety of healthy foods!

I would suggest that you try starting more meats. Avocado is good for adding calories with 'good' fats too.
And remember, hon, some babies HAVE to be the 10% too. It's very possible that you and/or your husband was a 10%er as well and it's just genetic.
Hang in there!

Ruth - you are too funny, the start of this thread is almost 2 years old! hahaha our 10% baby is now a healthy toddler and now he has an 11 month old little sister who is doing just great :)

LOL, I just figured that out! ears resurrected your old thread!
So, curious to ask, how does #2 compare in size with #1? Another 10%?
Glad that you ARE hanging in there...or hanging OUT there, more likely!
Too bad we can't all get together, eh? What a party!
cheers from Ruth, in Victoria Canada where the plum blossoms and daffodils are out!

Ruth - you have always been such a wealth of patience and information on this forum. I moved from HK to BJ in August.
The baby was not big, but has managed to stay just around/above 10% for weight - to us she look chubby hahah and at 11 months has a tiny belly (which of course to us looks huge!).
I am sooooo much more relaxed with #2 :)
The biggest issue is she is allergic to egg yolk (we haven't tested whites), so that has effected the diet, and ironically she has a total intolerance (refusal to eat and vomiting) to avocados our previous favourite baby food!!
But we are getting on with things, and it isn't too hard, the only thing is I have reduced the egg in my toddler's diet as not to expose the baby to it... so I need to figure out how to feed him egg, but not expose her...
And I am probably going to extend BF a bit longer than the planned 13 months, maybe 15 months.
Glad you still visit the forum :)

Glad I was able to get an old thread rolling again!
Anyway, crj, I personally also prefer the set yoghurt in in the transparent tubs with the black & white label. Just didn't try it for the baby coz it doesn't say organic on the tub. But, I gave him some today mixed with pureed plum and he loved it. Guess he has the same tastes as his mother!

my baby loves plain youghurt. We often make our own when the weather is warm, and now that it has been quite cool we just buy dairy farm(plain), and Total 10% fat greek yoghurt. the latter is delicious
