Hi, I am looking for black out curtains for my kids rooms and also my own. I've been told that Shenzhen is the place to go to for reasoable xurtains. I was wondering if it is worth the effort and visa money to go there or if there is a place in Hong Kong who can do a good job for a similar price??

When I had curtains made (in Sai Kung) I had black-out lining included and decided to go for detachable ones (velcro), for cleaning purposes, rather than have them sewn to the curtains. The lining is a matching cream colour yet very effective.
I'm sure it's way more expensive than Shenzhen but the quality is tops and getting them organised was no bother. I should imagine most curtain makers will be able to supply black-outs.
If you already have the curtains then maybe you can just get black-outs made to velcro on them.
(BTW, I've just found out that IKEA's curtains sewing service is good. I needed curtains for a non-standard sized bay window but didn't want to spend a fortune as I know I won't take them with me when I move. I saw some plain cotton ready-mades I liked at their Sha Tin branch but they were too big and were tabbed, not 4-pleats. However, the sewing woman there, Anna, understood exactly what I was after and adapted them to the right dimension and changed them from tabs to 4-pleats. The sewing took 2 weeks, the curtains look great and, best of all, it was a really cheap option.)

IKEA in causewaybay have black-out curtain on custom-made order only. Not sure abt the price. An option to consider

Thanks SO much for this. I didn't realise that Ikea was an option. I will definitely check that out. We have blinds at the moment but are hoping that black out curtains will encourage the kids to sleep for longer (wishful thinking!).

Sure it is. Only one day to make (order first thing in the morning and take home that evening and hang)fully lined blockout curtains for a whole house and at a very reasonable price compared to HK.
Just take photos of the windows and the measurements with you.

We use this guy for all our curtains - he comes to the house, brings samples, measures, etc... And his prices are very competitive, so it is worth getting a quote at least.
The best thing is he REALLY listens to what you want and is very customer focused.

Thanks very much. Sounds good... if you don't mind saying, what sort of price bracket would you consider competitive? For a pair of curtains for a standard room from floor to ceiling, what sort of price would you look at? Thanks

Oh, sorry, we did out whole flat (with curtains and only had blackout in the bedroom) - while other companies the total came in at well over 10k, he was under 10k. Can't remember the breakdown.
It's free to get a quote :)
