MoneyGram International

Hi, has anybody used MoneyGram International before? I am selling something on the internet and a potential buyer from overseas said he's going to pay via this channel. I've not heard of it and just find it unusual that this company will come to my door and give me US in cash. Please tell me if this is the way it really works. Thanks.

I had an experience via the trading section and Moneygram. I was selling some stuff and a buyer told me she would send me a DHL guy, I had to give my stuff to him, he would give me an no to track. Once I have the no, I could unblock the money transfer from Moneygram.

It was a big scam. I traced and played around for about 3 weeks, contacted the bank that was supposed the make the transfer (bank didn't exist), tried to have payment via Paypal and the buyer sent me fake emails from paypals( i constcted paypal and they were tracing the scammer) And I traced the whole scam via Google. I have contacted Ed and he banned the seller from using Asiaxpat. The seller is using another expat site in HK to scam people. If you pm me , i can give you more details. But please be very careful....I am sure lots of people got scammed that way...Buyer was from South Africa, bank from Canada, and the two adresses for deliveries were in Sth Africa, then US. But once I googled the US one, it was linked to a scam site. Beware.

This guy, with an Indian name, said he will use Fed-Ex shipping which he has a corporate account with. It's agreed that only after I receive the money, I let him know and he'll contact Fed-Ex to come and pick up the goods. I find it weird that he said the MoneyGram people will bring US cash to me. I received a confirmation email from MoneyGram. They said it will take 3-4 working days for the money to reach my door directly, not my bank account. I guess in this case I have nothing to lose. The worst is being fooled. I've been asking around and so far nobody knows what MoneyGram International is. I've searched and found its website, but it doesn't mean anything!

BTW, the buyer hasn't got any address for me. He said he will be fully responsible for shipping the goods. (The goods are big and movers will be needed.) So if I don't receive any money, I will not let anybody take my goods.

I have confirmation Moneygram is something like paypal... wait and see but i bet that you will never see the cash! just be safe and do not let a Fed ex guy go with your stuff without you having cash in hands. nothing to loose... google the name of buyer, see what bank is the money gram originating from ( mine was royalbankofcanada and not a real bank after investigation), even the money gram email was a fraud as I did try to trace its origin but only had an answer from a woman, with no legal status or position stated in the moneygram organistion, stating that the email was real!

please let me know how it's going to turn out.

My items were bulky as well and I always wondered why the woman was buying them and shipping them as the cost was going to be higher than the retails value! it was a printer and a very big food processor.

I remember reading various bits of information that although the "Money Gram" company might be "legit", that some scammers are using it's service due to certain "loopholes" in the way it does it's business and transactions. Some people trying to sell things via some sites such as eBay as sometimes targeted using the "MoneyGram Scam".

Here's a bit more info about some people who have had bad dealing with MoneyGram:

Go to google.com and enter in "Moneygram scam" and you will find lots of links with other variations of how this scam sometimes works.

I'd say that unless you have the money in hand or some other method by which you feel confident, and if you suspect something "strange" about it, that perhaps it's best to decline it.

Good luck.

Thanks all. I read through the links BigDon provided. Seems like it's mostly the buyers who got scammed.

I went to the MoneyGram website and found the contacts of their HK dealers. I called up one of them and they said they will only deal with money orders, not cash. So I guess the buyer is not a "real" one.

My goods are 2 pianos, so definitely I will not ship them away somewhere without being paid in full.

My story has excatly the same line. I am not sure what they end up with as i wouldn't have got a fedex/DHL guy pick up my stuff without seeing cash.... but I think it must work sometimes. What you want to do now is give his username to ED so he can delete the buyer's account and prevent him from trying to scam somebody else
