Hi
I want to start feeding baby flax seeds or flax seed oil.
I have read two methods:
1. Add oil to food
2. Grind up flax seeds very very small and add to food
Does anyone have any experience with either of these?
Which do you use?
How much per day?
Any comments?
Thanks

I add oil to food, if I make roast veg. puree for pasta, say, I will mix in a bit of the oil ( not cook with it though as it ruins the vit's and minerals).

My son would take a large spoonful of it every day without any problem. Also I throw in some seeds when ever I make a banana cake which the kids love.

So for a baby, the oil is actually easier than griding up the seeds...
Hmm, will get oil then.
and save the seeds for adult food :)

Another alternative to plain flaxseed oil is Udo's Oil, a blend of oils: flaxseed, sunflower, seasame see, coconut and evening primose. The oils make a 3.6.9 blend which provides the optimal balance of Omega 3 and 6 (2:1 ratio).
The bottled oil does require refrigeration but you can also get it in capsules (prick and squeeze).
It was originally made by Udo Eramus (yes, real name) but is now made by Flora.
You can buy this in Hong Kong at for example Healthy Delight. Also seen it in UNY.
More info on Udo's at:
http://www.udoerasmus.com/products/pdf_files/Udos_Choice_Oil_Blend.pdf
Healthy Delight is in Central:

And here are some recipes with Udo's oil, perhaps you can use these when your LO is older.
http://www.florahealth.com/flora/home/canada/products/udooilrecipes.asp
You can also try mixing it in with a bit of yoghurt or fresh fruit juice.
For Udo's Oil the recommended level is 1 Tbsp of Udo's 3.6.9 Oil Blend per 50 lbs of body weight. so if you use this, you won't have to add much to your LO's food.
And it's good for mums too - great for fatigue, PMS, and dry skin, hair and nails!

crj--be sure the oil you use has not gone rancid, it's not safe for consumption then. It turns quickly so you really need to taste it before every use. I've even bought some that has been rancid on purchase. Buy it from a refrigerator, and get it into yours quickly, or even keep it in the freezer. (The ground seeds should be kept in the fridge too.)
An alternative to faxseed oil is walnut oil, it keeps a bit better and is also a good source of omega 3 efa's.

Taste it, it'll be bitter.

so the udo s oil is kinda popular in hk?i dont see people buying them..

All Things Healthy is more expensive, in case that's an issue...
ellie> I don't go crazy buying all kinds of supplements but I do buy Udo's and so do some of my friends. There is at least enough of a market to make it worth importing it. Although I have yet to take it by the spoonful as @@'s son does!

We have now been using FlaxSeed Oil every day for about 4 months - we mix a spoon in with his breakfast every day - he doesn't mind and we think it is good for him.
For us the oil worked out better than the seeds.

We use the oil - daughter takes a spoonful with her breakfast. DOesn't seem to notice it as she still eats just as well.

Sorry to be ignorant, but can somebody explain the benefits of Flaxseed oil for babies? I have been hearing a lot about it recently on the ether but don't know any specifics.

FlaxSeed Oil has the 'good' Omega 3 oils, which are supposed to be good for health and brain development as well as heart. Flaxseed should be kept in the fridge and not cooked - it looses its value when heated.
Brewers Yeast is packed with protein and iron as well as a few other vitamins.
I started around 8 months.
Basically, breakfast is mixed grains with papaya, mangoe, kiwi and other fruit and yogurt and I add a spoonful of FlaxSeed Oil and Brewers Yeast each day.
I buy the Brewers Yeast at HealthGate, although I saw it once at CitySuper. I buy the FlaxSeed Oil at CitySuper.
Hope that helps.

I have had better luck with the oil than the seeds. The oil is so easy, you just put a spoonful into the cereal... The seeds have a stronger taste, but you can try them.
Do NOT cook them, just grind and add them or add them whole depending on how old your baby is.
