What Brian said is v. sensible - a lot of people just hire a tutor to 'improve the child's English' - this is a very bad start. Unless the child has very specific problems in English (perhaps tenses, or pronunciation, or phrasal verbs, or whatever)a highly qualified teacher is maybe not the answer, as the time ($) could well be wasted. I do occasional tutoring and to be honest I dislike it intensely, as parents generally don't have a clue what they actually want the tutor to do, but they have seen that their son/daughter isn't at the top of the Engish class and they feel that throwing some cash at the 'problem' will suddenly make all the difference.

Sorry for those of you making your living from tutoring, but at $300-500/hr parents would be much better off buying their children some age-appropriate books and getting them into a reading habit. This is how people learn a written language, from exposure to correct examples in a real situatioon, not from doing grammatical exercises. And if you want your children to learn real English then how about getting them to go out and make some non-Chinese friends? You cannot bring up a child in a monolingual environment, as most HK people do, and then expect them to become fluent in another language.

To the original poster, the best bet is for your daughter to get herself a nice English-speaking boyfriend - that will do more to improve her English than any number of high-priced tutors...

Totally agree except the boyfriend bit, a nice english friend will do just as well.I feel that sometimes when one hears "my son/daughter has a tutor" ones pride is piqued and it is like keeping up with the Jones.

To JosephineHK, if you want your child to really learn English, save your money and send her to summer school in an English speaking country where she WILL HAVE TO speak English 24/7.My friends son has just spent a year in England in school and his ability has improved noticably even though here he had a tutor for 4 years and attended an English medium school.

Don't waste your money

250/hr was the going rate when I was teaching 3 yrs back. With most of my students I felt that if just a bit more effort was made towards making sure they read a little bit of English, watched some English TV it would've helped increase their familiarity with the language.

would just like to mention on the subject of fees that a friend of mine teaches maths and the sciences and charges anywhere between $700-$900 per hour. evidently if these kids dont pass with a A* they are deemed as a failure

I am a Learning Specialist who works at an Int'l School and have lived here in HK for 7 years. I agree with the many posts which said that you need to keep your goal in mind... if it is improved English "conversation" skills you have in mind then an hour a week is not the way to go... Many locals ask for "grammar" lessons and believe me, if you want them to hate English then this would likely do it... Lots of reading/writing/speaking/listening with a good language model in mind and balanced with some writing that allows their voice to develop and come through... the "going rate" is a silly concept - yes you could get someone to do it for 200, yes, some cost 1000/hr... sometimes "you get what you pay for" and sometimes "fools and their money are soon parted..." Perhaps your child's teacher has some suggestions?

I've been here for 12 years, have 2 degrees and a TEFL cert. I charge $250/hr for private tutoring. But then I hate doing it so am down to my last 2 students...

I am paid $800 an hour for my tutoring. However, I know of other tutors who are paid more than me. As a teacher in a top international school, any less than that is not worth my time and effort. I cater for a child's needs very carefully, however I won't teach any children who are not motivated to improve as it is a waste of my time and effort and a waste of the parents money. Clearly, I will try different ways to make the lessons interesting but I don't believe in wasting anybodys time.

Many of the parents who are willing to pay this kind of money also live in very difficult to access places. Thus, it takes a long time to travel to their home and this must be factored in as a cost unless they are willing to come to you.
