Coming from NYC I can recommend Isola Bar & Grill in IFC Mall. It has a great atmosphere with a good view and the food is very good as well. Va Bene I also recommend.
Sole Mio in Soho on Elgin St. Food is pretty good but not as gourmet fancy as the first two places but the prices are less. Place is small so I suggest if you make reservations ask for a table downstairs. Upstair the ceiling is low so it can be quite stuffy and clausterphobic. I've been to all three so I can say they are good. My collegues have said Al Dente is also very good but I have never been there personally as I always seem to go back to Va Bene.

small place, just off escalator, alley way behind Pure Fitness. La Piazetta.. seating inside and out.. if you don't like what is on the menu, ask Paulo and he will make something for you. Not too expensive, and Paulo, being Italian, is passionate about food. ( service can be a little hit/miss tho LOL, sorry Paulo !

Gaia is good, and Baci in Lan Kwai Fong. What about the one in IFC. I love the decoration. Their Anti-pasta was inpressive.

We have catered food from Baci Restaurant @ LKF for our private function. The spead was presentable, delectable and all the food was wide out by our guest within the 1st hour!
The service staff were helpful and attentive. 2 thumbs up!
