As in home VOIP or corporate VOIP? For home, Skype works just fine. I suspect they also have corporate arrangements.

I beg to differ. We have used Skype exclusively for going on 3 years now and seldom have problems. We have a subscriptionl, two numbers in different countries and a Skype phone. Sure it's not always perfect at peak times (some weekend afternoons and during holidays) but overall we have great call quality.
It does depend which country you call though. We get perfect call quality for Western Europe. The US is more hit and miss, but still more than good enough to get rid of a landline.
I guess your results vary.

VOIP is dependent on the quality of your Internet connection. In our place it slows down on weekends (lots of people on) and consequently Skype quality is on average a touch lower. Not Skype's fault.
Your results may vary. If I had your experience I would have looked elsewhere as well.

"I object to Skype's connection charges even before making any call."
No charge at all if you have a subscription. My call log is full of "$0.00".

If you are using point to point, there are many SIP clients free to download, and you can even can install SIP gateway to build your VoIP network, Skype is too commercial now, and is not cheap any more.

We used skype for close to 3 yrs for business from a variety of locations throughout Asia and found it sadly lacking and it would let us down regularly, don't believe me google 'skype down again' or add a random date to 'skype down' and see how many results you get.
Our sales team are dynamic and fast moving and having skype crash as often as it did as well as the frequent call dropping and under-water voice quality we eventually decided to drop it (no pun intended).
After some searching and due diligence we used a local Hong Kong company to set up a proper VOIP system that ran to our phone system and not tied to a computer, I have to say they were excellent and were able to set up systems at other offices we had in Singapore and Bangkok.
We have never looked back, the call quality has been excellent and down time has been 0:00 minutes!
I wish we had done it years ago instead of wasting time and losing money and sales running through mud with skype, a real VOIP network system is one million miles away from skype.
We used www.encoreprotech.com couldn't fault their service, not the cheapest but then we are not chatting to friends from a computer in our bedrooms we are running a business and need reliable phone access.
