fizz,

Can only give some help, not much as I have not lived that way for years. There was a bar called 'Soho' and one I forget the name of in Tai Po Market area. Less expats than a few years ago but still a few I would assume. Suggest Saturday evening you & ideally your other half if you see bar go in to look - you will soon know if you are welcome or not by how the guys react & by looking at the other customers, expect about 1 in 6 to 'feel' right/ok!

Soho is still there, although I haven't been there for a year or so. It's just off Kwong Fuk Road. Almost opposite on Kwong Fuk Road is an Indian restaurant called Shalimar that's not bad. There's an Italian restaurant too but I forget the name, I'll ask my husband tonight.

A little further away is a bar called After Five, which also has food, but it's hard to explain where it is. It's in the vicinity of the fire station/government offices, so if you walk down On Chee Road from the bus terminal and keep going across the big road, it's in that block. There are also a couple of restaurants in On Chee Road that I think have English menus.

There is a place opening in about 2 weeks in Tai Po Tai Mei Tuk called Bahia Bar and BBQ Thai restaurant which I passed last week and looks impressive in a sence it's not like the rest of the local thai restaurants which stretches along the sea front. The place has good views and althought the website is not updated it gives you a fair indication on what it has to offer www.bahia.hk. If you are familar to London's chinatown Mr Wu's restaurants which I've always been to as a student its the same owner. He also gave me a 10% discount card

There's a nice Italian rest near Tai Po Plaza. It is across the road of Wellcome 24hrs Supermarket (Eightlands Garden). The pizza and pasta are sooo YUMMY. around HK$200-250 for 2 persons.

It is called OLIVER.
