Hello! We are thinking off moving from the 60th floor down to a village house because our landlord is getting a bit greedy and wants to hike up our rent by 25%. We've found one in NAI CHUNG VILLAGE in Sai Kung. Any advice on living in a village house? Security??? Dealing with the rainy season in a village? Bugs???

Go at night and check out the area - see how many dogs are barking and if you can find a place to park. To us, out of control barking dogs are the main factor in choosing a village. For security, get a dog and lock your gate (think security more depends on the foot traffic around the particuar house). For bugs, use screen doors, ceiling fans and get a Skeeter Vac. Good luck on your move!

If you dont want a dog, you can also look into getting a security system installed.

First of all, which section of Sai Kung you are looking for. And how big is the village. Then the last question would be, are you planning to rent the whole 3 storey house, or just the ground/1st floor, mid or top floor.
I've living in Sai Kung village house with no problem of security at all for almost 8 years. The local villagers are nosy enough to scare the burgulars, and we have the police petrolling few times a day. I see a couple of dogs around the area, but not one owned by ppl live nearby.
I would advise to go the house hunting after the rainy days, then you can see if there is any leakage problem. Parking lot, again depend on where you pick, you can similar check with the agent. Normally, the parking lots is run by the villager. Or if you are lucky enough, you can get a space without anyone knocking your door for money.
Bugs is a definite thing in the villages, mosquitos is a must. Very much depend on which lot of the village, hence, if the house is next to an open area would have less bugs.

thanks for all the advice. can anyone suggest an affordable security system? I have heard of Group 4 Securicor for a wireless system and I know there is ADT. I've also heard of getting electric door handles that sound off when tampered with but will need a separate system for the windows. I am renting so I don't want to spend a fortune on this.
