I would like to fly to HK on a one-way ticket to look for work. (I have had some tentative offers). I am American. I've been told that immigration rules have changed & HK requires a return ticket in order to enter. Is this true & is there any way to come to HK without a return ticket?

If you come here on a tourist visa then it stands to reason that you are a tourist and therefore need a return ticket. It would also constitute a breech of your tourist visa conditions to look for work - but it's unlikely anyone would find out about that anyway. When you do find a prospective employer it will be up to the employer to sponsor/lodge the application for your employment visa at which time you are supposed to be out of HK, but once again not absolutely essential. The Immigration Dept doesn't particularly like applications for change of visa status. And the prospective employer will need to show why the job being offered to you cannot be performed by a local. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Would I even be allowed past immigration without a return ticket?

You'd be taking a chance if you didn't have a return ticket. Plus, if you are coming from the States, it is often the case that r/t tickets are not much more (and sometimes a little cheaper) than o/w tickets.
If you've had some tentative offers, those employers should be able to help you with issues like this, no?

With a one-way return, you are assuming that you will be able find a position and that you will get an employment visa.
From the ImmD website:
+++
Visitors are required to have adequate funds to cover the duration of their stay without working and, unless in transit to the Mainland of China or the region of Macau, to hold onward or return tickets.
+++
Not having these could mean you are turned away and a bona fide entry later, or employment visa application, could be a problem. You have to decide whether it is worth the risk.

I flew from London ocne with a single ticket and Virgin checked my passport and visa before giving me my boarding pass. The agent told me she wouldn't have allowed me to board the plane unless I had a valid work permit.

Thank you all for your advice. JWM, I will definitely buy a return ticket just in case.

I had already bought a one-way ticket when a friend of mine told me of the return ticket policy. So, now I'm going to purchase another ticket. I did quite a bit of shopping around and my separate return ticket is actually going to be less than the r/t would have been.
