Does anybody know whether there are any baby groups, baby play groups or something similar in Guanghzou ?

Hi Ruth,
thxs for your message. I assume you lived there before. It's not confirmed yet but we might move there from HK next spring. Do you have any other tips perhaps ? Our son is nearly 7 months now and in HK we are participating in a class called PEKIP for the baby's development as well as swimming class for parents and baby. I only have one friend living in GZ but he doesn't really sound positive about the place.
thanxs again

Karen Williams is no longer in China. Go to www.gwic.org, look at the month of December, scroll down to the 'Additional Activities' text and you will find the contact info for the Playgroup. They also have a musicgroup for little ones.
Ruth, always check the website before posting info, things change alot. Plus, you're in Canada now!! ;)

mriehl,
GZ is certainly not like HK but it;s really not a bad place to be with a child. We have a lovely friendly Mum and Baby group here - there's Moms and Tots sessions at Goldarch - one of the complexes where a lot of expats live and there's a gymboree if you want more structured classes (mainly chinese though). Nothing much like PEKIP though, not sure about swimming lessons but most complexes have a pool. We have informal music classes too.
Everything's much more relaxed and less structured and pressured than in HK. You can participate as much or as little as you like.
As for clothes and baby equipment, we have all that here too. Like I say, it's really not a bad place to be bringing up a child....

hi spicegal,
thanks a lot for all this information. we are not quite sure yet if we are really moving but I thought it's better to be a little bit informed. i don't nessessarily need pekip just baby classes and the equipment are fine. i lived in shanghai before hk so i know a little bit about living "on the mainland"....
thanks a lot again

Don't know all the reasons for potential move, but if I were already settled in HK, I'd think twice about moving to GZ. Don't get me wrong, I like GZ, and GWIC is great, and of course you can have a good life here. But the pollution is awful, there are fewer western amenities, fewer choices in schools, and it's much harder to navigate without speaking Chinese than it is in HK. There are just a lot more options and amenities for westerners in HK. (There are no City Supers here, for starters!) On the other hand, I'd venture to guess that if you speak Chinese (of any variety) and are willing to live a more Chinese lifestyle, GZ is a lot cheaper than HK.

HK is my hometown and when we found out we were moving to GZ all our friends said how awful it was and poor me being pregnant and moving to China - like I say, it's not so bad though.
Sure, I stock up on food and stuff when I go back to HK but at least here we're lucky enough to haev HK nearby.
As for the baby activities - I think while they're young it doesn't matter so much - maybe as they grow we'll want a better choice of schools and amenities, but for now it's OK.
We consider ourselves lucky - we could have been sent to Chengdu or Wuhan (or somewhere even more remote)!! And I speak some chinese which does definitely make life easier - but I don't consider the air pollution any worse here than on HK island or Kowloon.
I think if you've lived in Shanghai you won't find GZ so bad really.

Having lived in both HK and GZ, I can honestly say it's not as bad a move as people think. The support network is fantastic and you will get the odd "Guangzhou Blues", but I've never found a more friendly place, but with expats and locals. Had 2 babies while I was over there and never had a problem with baby goods or schooling. Learn the lingo and the place is your oyster. PS, HK is only 3hrs by bus (faster by train) and great to stock up on anything that you desperately miss, although these visits will become fewer and far between. I still keep in touch with the girls from my old days and they've all moved on but we still reminisce every now and then....
