Hiya I have some guests from out of town who are wannabe popstars. Can anyone tell me which karaoke box venue has a good selection of English songs (recent ones too)?
thanks in advance ....

Good luck. It's tough finding anything but a few Beatles tracks, boy bands and Englebert Humperdinck. However, Neway CEO in Causeway Bay has a decent selection most of the time. Last time I was there there were a few Franz tracks and there are usually some Robbie tracks that are well worth singing. If your friends are really looking forward to being humiliated they could try Keane -- I'm not sure anyone can make those songs sound good in Karaoke...

Why don't you take them down to Philippine Islands Restaurant beside Dusk to Dawn in Wanchai. They have heaps of English music and great bands as they cater to the local Filipino community who are all crazy about Karaoke and can generally sing well. The MC is a quite well known Filipino singer with a few hits and is very professional. You can eat and drink reasonably plus plenty of cute, friendly (non-working) girls floating around. My watering hole these days. Very busy on Sat and Sun but quieter during the week.

thanks for the suggestions, will check them out.
i'm afraid but definetely not ashamed to have never heard a franz or a keane track. i'm still stuck in the robbie era ....

haha... sorry, I guess you might not be British? Although the use of the term "popstar" might suggest otherwise...
Maybe it's the generation gap.
Franz Ferdinand was the biggest new thing from Scotland about two years ago, winning multiple awards, and they came to HK last year to support their second album.
Keane won lots of awards too, and they've now released their second record, which was so-so.
Unlike Robbie Williams, neither Franz or Keane are great to sing in karaoke though. Or maybe it's just me...
Another British band you can find at CEO is Suede. These songs are well worth singing as well...
There are even fewer up-to-date American bands (by that I mean within the last 3 decades) you can find. There's a RHCP track or two and some R&B stuff, but not much else.
