Hi -
I want to hang a (picture, clock, decorative you-name-it) and my newly renovated apartment has pristine white concrete walls. I just tried to nail in a hook advertised as being made for brick walls, but the plaster just crumbled.
If I break down and call a handyman, how will he install my picture hooks? Epoxy? Drilling and sinking a screw with a plastic template? Thanks for any advice. I regard calling somebody for help on this as a direct assault on my self-reliance. Don't tell my wife - she'll insist on a professional....
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm goy sai.

yes agreed, my hammer drill is my best buddy. Get one with quick release drill bits in 6mm and 8mm for heavy duty hanging if needed. Make sure the drill has a added regular hand drill chuck that you can use for regular drill bits.
If you dont want to spend big bucks just buy a Black & Decker Pro Series like I did.
Cheers and good luck.

No need for all that. Head to Welcome or any hardware store, buy the 3M hooks with the 3 little nails. One bang with a hammer and they go straight into the concrete and are really strong. We have lots of pictures some big, some small all hung with these. On Sunday though I need to take them out again as we are moving and will need to plaster up the holes - that will be the true test.

I've hung many a picture, big and small. Those 3M hooks are ok for a light weight picture, and you have to be careful hammering them in. But, when removing them they do take out a big chunk of plaster. The best is a hammer drill, and you can get them many places. Get several carbide masonry drill bits as they get dull pretty quick if you're doing a lot of drilling. They are pretty inexpensive. You can pick them up in shops on Thomson Rd in Wanchai. Also pick up the small dia plastic sleeves and screws that you will be putting into the drilled hole. When drilling, go past the top plaster coat into the concrete; about 35mm total depth should do it in most cases. Then slide or hammer in the plastic sleeve and thread the screw in until you have room for the picture wire to hang from. Done!

Thanks for the advice. I did try the three-nail hooks before consulting the forum, and all I managed to do was put a crater in my plaster. I found a hammer-drill in Kowloon and put in a screw with a plastic sleeve - good to go. Plastering will be a test and no doubt my landlord will try to claim some damages, but whatever. Home Depot could make a killing here though, for as difficult as it is to find what you need. Has anyone ever looked for smoke detectors? Impossible. Thanks.

I just drilled a hole in my wall to the proper depth, hammered in the plastic sleeve/anchor, put up the shelving which seemed secure, then the entire thing - screw and plastic anchor pulled out from the wall under the weight. Any advice? Perhaps an epoxy to hold it in or the old-fashioned wing anchors? I tried a larger size plastic anchor which wouldn't fit. Thank you!

Tip : If you want to keep the mess to a minimum. While drilling have someone hold the vacuum cleaner hose under hole.
It will take away all the plaster coming out of the wall.
This will save you the trouble of laying down plastic or newspapers.

thank you everyone - I brought my anchor to a hardware store and they gave me a bigger rubber one (a larger plastic one cracked when I hammered it) and the shelves are up and strong. Feels good to accomplish something!

how much does a hammer drill cost? and how difficult is it to plug up the holes once I leave my current flat? thanks
