We didn't make a big deal out of it, Ellie55, 'cos figure bub is never gonna remember it plus we were too tired from taking care of her (LOL).
What we did though, by co-incidence, is to get a family portrait done on the actual birth date in a fancy studio. Pictures turned out very nice although we were so drained coaxing smile after smile from her! We are glad we did it, though. Guess we will give the pictures to her on her 18th birthday! We also had a cake-cutting thingi at home with my parents and we ate the yummy cake while bub watched. HaHa...

Well, if you want to be very OTT you can rent a ballroom in a 5 star hotel, arrange for entertainment, and invite 300 people. (oh, yes this has been done in HK!)
You could have a few close friends/family over and play with baby, take some photos, etc...
You could decide to take all the clothing and toys that no longer fit and bring baby with you while you donate them to a local charity - this could be a birthday ritual to teach child about giving back. You could also ask for charity donations instead of gifts.
Alternatively, you could be like me and think baby is too young to know, but I am taking the day off of work to spend with him, maybe take him swimming or something else he enjoys. And will drop off some charity items as well.

Both of my kids's first birthday were celebrated by having a VERY good dinner with family members only. Friends remember their birthdays, gave presents, and we had afternoon tea/cake party.
Before all that, I always thought I need to make a HUGE thing and HUGE deal out of it.... afterwards, we were glad, and we know it was right to keep it NOT too tiring, and NOT too extravagant. My husband keeps saying, we can afford it in a 5 star hotel ballroom, and invite hundred of guests (like a wedding? LOL).... but then what would you give him or her for their 12 th birthday? 16 th birthday? etc.
Each year, the birthday celebrations become more extravagant... b/c now, my elder one is 3 years old, she has schoolmates, friends from ballet, art, chinese, english ...classes.... so it's evitable.
While you can, at 1 year old, keep it simple.
Someone told me the rule she went by was:
One year old- invite ONE friend (of your child's).
TWo year old- invite TWO friends
and so on... seems pretty good to me.
Anyways, just my opinion, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your child!

Never made a big deal of birthdays until we moved here now with my youngest fast approaching 1 I feel we need to do something as she has been to at least 4 1 year old birthday parties!!!

ellie, i recently attended a 1st birthday party and even though the apartment was spacious, there were still way too many babies!! i think there were at least 10 babies/toddlers!
we turn 1 in march and i might have a small gathering but i am restricting it to babies we know from our regular playgroup, which is pretty small in the first place and one other couple who had a baby around the same time as us. i have a friend who told me she had 5 babies over for her kid's 1st and she said that was more than enough!

The photos and video were the most important thing at the 1st birthday of both kids. The best present we got from their godmother was the 1st birthday photo frame. 1 photo for each month, and then the center big one is the 1year old photo. Very significant photo. It's one that I keep looking at every day and think how time flies.
We have been to many 1 year old birthday parties, but all of them, really was just a party for the adults. (except for the birthday cake, I thought it was a party for just the parents.... red wine, champagne, chicken wings, potato salad, lasagna....) Nothing for the 1 year old. The 1 year old was always in the helper's hands, feeding milk, and slept halfway through the party.

yeah, go for it, Ellie55. Like Kate, I look at the photos we took at our baby's 1st b'day and marvel how she has changed and how we could never go back to that stage of her life, ever! We did our photo shoot in Australia where they give us a free sitting complete with props (feathers, bucket for bub to sit in, wooden ratten seat with teddy bears all around) plus one free portrait-sized photo. You pay for additional photos, and they are reasonably priced. I wonder if there are such "offers" in HK? My point is that it doesn't need to cost a bomb. BTW, we did both the sepia/black-and-white and full-colour options and prefer the latter as we all look so "warm-looking" and bub's rosy complexion and hair colour were highlighted. Upon the photographer's sugggestion, hubby and I wore jeans whilst bub had a pink jumpsuit on - the blue jeans mixed with the pink look really nice, with a white background. Apparently colours play an important part in a photo shoot.

I am a professional photographer and offer a stunning 1st birthday shoot! You bring the baby, a cake and a spare nappy and leave the rest to me. I will capture the shots as your child discovers the cake and digs in for a taste. You will get a stunning array of photos capturing the first birthday, Mom & Dad will be in a few shots at the beginning too! Great for sharing with family and friends too. Send me a message if you would like more information or to see samples.

We held a dinner for all our friends (not family as they are in the UK) and just celebrated her birthday at Someplace Else in the Sheration. Great becuase at the time it had a kiddies playarea, Disney movie and a little kids buffet (we had a couple of 2-6 year olds come). And it went so nicely that everyone had a nice time and was relaxed (that's the main thing).
