Hi everyone, I'm hoping to secure work in Seoul this year and will need a nanny for my two children. Any advice would be helpful... I'm especially interested in individuals who can speak Korean or Russian.

Hi -
you can usually find Chinese Koreans - speak both Chinese and a heavily accented korean - for equivalent of about $1200/month USD.
A local Korean hire, full time, non live in - costs significantly more. They would generally only speak Korean, no Russian, and their charge is between $1500-$2000 month USD.
A daily charge for nannies varies anywhere from about $60-$90/day.
I have a filipino helper - who is AMAZINg and I love her. No cooking, decent housekeeping and fabulous with my kids. (I teach English as well.) I pay her $1100 for five full days (8-7pm) and half day saturday. (8-12)
Korea does have very affordable creche type situations. Depending on the age of your children, you can send them to an all day structured day care/school from anywhere from $150-$450/month. This is for a local school however. I know that those taught in English, dont' have as long hours and are significantly more expensive.
Hope this helps.

HKCC - are there many Philipino helpers in Korea? Are there agencies like in HK?
In Japan I know it is very rare and very expensive.
Just curious.

there are quite a few filipinos helpers here - many are illegal. The Korean government, about two years ago, legalized the hiring and supposedly set up agencies to deal with this.
However, everyone I know with a filipino helper - has them illegally, as many have overstayed their visas (were factory workers or something else) and continue to stay here, but don't have jobs. So many become helpers. THe pay is much better than HK, but they don't have as much protection and health care and whatnot is more difficult for them.

Hi again hkchoichoi,
Thanks for all the info, the $1200 quote, is that for a 'live-in' nanny? Also where is the best place to advertise? thanks again everyone

Liveins vary - it's a matter of finding one you like and they may ask for more than 1200 - sometimes they ask for as much as $1400. My friend is paying her live in, Chinese/Korean helper (no English) 1.3 million won - which is about $1400. But hers cooks, cleans, and takes care of her baby - and lives in and stays until Saturday afternoon, and returns Sunday night.
My helper - filipino - not live in. Advertising is probably not the way you want to go - you'll want to initiate the search using people who have had helpers and get recommendations that way. There is a supermarket in Hannamdong - that has quite a few posting for helpers - you can always go there and see if you can find one.
When you get here, and if you want some recommendations - my helper can probably recommend a few.
