Police Roadblock.

May be a silly question but what is the purpose of these roadblocks?

Got pulled over last night, 11pm woman on her own, whilst they checked my details and they refused to tell me why they pulled me over.

Found the whole thing very frightening and couldn't understand the logic behind it.

I appreciate they do this things to check whether taxi pax are wearing betls, carrying II's, etc but why single woman on her own in nice car?

Normally if you drive a late model Mercedes, they leave you alone as I was told by my friends on the force. And also you look foreign, or a mature local, decently dressed they would not approach you for ID check??? Hey Car lover, are you local???

After more than 20 years here, I concur with Bayliner. Mercedes drivers seem to be rarely pulled over. But heard about a gweilo stopped (gasp) by a motorcycle police (don't know why). He was driving another person's Merc, and had no license or insurance. Let off with a "don't do it again".

But also know of a gweipo who was put in Wanchai nick for allowing a wheel to cross a double white line as she went around a tight corner. She had to wait for hubby to pay the fine. If only she had been driving a Merc.

Wasn't driving a Merc, not van and am not a local.

My 'nice' car is a hot little Mini (to me anyway), hitting the mid 30's and western.

I do have to admit that i did end up crying as i was so frightened, not normally like that at all.

Don't agree with the Merc thing. I once got stopped in a speed trap in Aberdeen. I was going the same speed as everyone else but no taxis, trucks or buses were pulled over. I was driving a Merc at the time and the only other car pulled over was also a Merc. I passed the speed trap about 20 min later while travelling in the opposite direction, and again, only Mercs were pulled over. Weird.

Cheerio........not complaining merely stating the fact that i was not told why i was stopped and wondering why people are stopped. I'm asking questions.

kar> You were unfortunate to be caught on a very rare POMO Day - P!ss Off Merc Owners Day!

Totty> You were probably unlucky. Chilly evening + bored policemen + every nth car = you getting stopped.

Mercedes has been an image for Hong Kong people for the longest time. With the riches trading in their new Benz after 2-3 years, The market is now flooded with them. Just in case your are not aware, Hong Kong people don't like 2nd hands goods... So like I said, only the new Benz don't get pull over, not all Benz.

City Slicker, What are you talking about??? What 2nd hand handbags???? Are you getting pull over because you were in possession of 2nd hand bags???? May be try buying 1st hand instead !!!!

Oh, by the way what I had wrote wasn't what I think, the actual was told by police friends... So who's being wrong??? you or the ones that pulls you over...

I leave in Clearwater Bay and they are always there at night in front of the park n shop. I got stop all the time (I only have a Kia), they usually check the licence and the back and that's it. No question even if I come back from a dinner (with wine !)

It is normal in this area as they indeed chase the II as well as the street racers (a lot here) so nothing to be afraid (at least starting the second check !)

Once again, it was dark (very little streetlights around), four policeman and lots o traffic and the time i was stopped (about 5mins although felt like 10) not one other car was stopped.

Frightened is probably the wrong word, i felt intimidated and was hacked of that they just kept saying 'police check, police check'.

I'm NOT complaining and have done nthing wrong, so was just wondering why the police check, hence the thread.

2007-02-02 HKT 12:27

A man believed to have been taking part in illegal road racing died in a crash in Tuen Mun last night. The impact tore apart his car, with the wreckage hitting another vehicle. The police have arrested three other drivers suspected of being involved in a race with the accident victim.

Just wonder if they can't communicate with the foreigner who don't speak Cantonese further. It is insignificant to put them over. Unless you are drunk, otherwise most of time the cap just would just check your ID, license and question you "Where are you going". What are they looking for.. it is always my question!!!

Ah Car Lover.... understand now!

Dude 71....amd assuming you are a Police Officer and no they didn't ask any of those questions.

Just saw this thread. Car lover is right. Police does not have "routine' check powers. Coppers are always trying it on here. They have very little street crimes to deal with and this sort of things keep them occupied. Totty, you are from the south east, may be you have noticed that the good looking birds get pulled over at night by Kent coppers so they have someone to chat up. Sorry, that was a joke; coppers just never ever do things like that.

Foxtrotalpha.....did make me laugh, my husband said the same thing "wanted to check out a hot bird in a hot car". Funny thing is, had to go through another road block not 3 days after this, in my hubbys car and didn't get a glance, so i wonder if it was the car. Oh well.

And like i said at the beginning, have nothing but respect for the police it's just that no matter where you are in the world, a single women in her car is always going to feel vunerable when pulled over at night.

Nice to know my comments made someone smile. I completely concur with your hudsband, just surprised no one mentioned it so far. How do I know coppers never ever do this? Because, 1) I know a lot of coppers, 2) my, for want of a better description, girl has butt length blond hair, used to drive a merc SL and went home late from work from Central London sometimes. So I have a lot experience of her NOT being stopped over the years.

Insist on her texting me every time she make late trips. Thinks I am a nuisance but single women in a car at night are vunerable. Keep the doors locked even for a police road block.

Going off the point a bit. Years ago I had an ex model working for me as the accounts manager, after she gave up the catwalk at 26. I had the VAT man in every quarter for a whole day till I caught on. Put big Orla from Ireland in charge of dealing with him and I never saw the VAT man again.

I am sure the police are such comsummate professionals that bending rules never occur to them, unlike those horrible VAT officers. Not even to have a game of "guessing how old that hot blonde is in that car" on a cold, boring, winter night.
