My parents are coming to town and my Dad loves to bike ride. Where can we rent bikes and go on a 20 mile bike ride - through low trafficked and pretty area? Thanks. I have a car but we would be 4 people biking!

One of the best times we had bike riding was at the Tai Po Waterfront Park. Actually it's the only place we (my family and I) could find that we could bike ride safely with no worries. When you are at the park, there are a few places you can rent bikes..roughly cost around $40-60HKD a day for a bike depending on what kind of bike you rent and who you rent them from, They even have family 3 seaters. By rail, you take the KCR East rail to Tai Po and take a taxi to the park or you can drive. The bike path is very long and you'll have plenty of room to ride around the waterfront. Here's the link below. Hope that helps..

The bike path in this area is good - you can ride from Shatin all the way past Tai Po to Tai Mei Tuk if you want. However, I would strongly recommend you not go on a Sunday. It is very crowded with people who don't know how to ride, swerving all over the path, stopping without warning in the middle of the path, and generally a hazard to themselves and everyone else.

If your after something a little more challenging, like hills or off road, then there's some superb riding to be had in Tai Mo Shan- Tai Lam Country Parks. Starting at Tai Mo Shan either taking the Cycle path road or Mountain Bike trail all the way down and around Tai Lam Reservoir. Either way it's a beautiful area very quiet and a nice side of HK to see for folks visiting.
I would advise you to apply for a Mountain Bike Permit as the area is managed by Ag and Fish department, it's free and by doing so the authority may open up more trails in the future which HK desperately needs.
