I'm moving to a new place and need to buy a washing machine. Which brands/models are most suitable for someone in a single apartment with basic requirements?

I had used Sanyo, Hitachi before and now Panasonic. Since they were new purchases, I had no trouble for 5 yrs, other than to change the hose for water outlet. I find that getting a 8-9kg load is good as I can load 1 week's dirty laundry at 1 go.

Fisher&Paykel are great, Whilrpool of course, front loading with 1/2 load option is a good style for HK.

I do not like the washer/dryer combo - they are not very efficient or good at drying. Get a separate dryer if required.

Alternatively, use a laundry service, they are not very expensive in HK - depends where you live, but there are loads in the mid-levels, and many that pick up and deliver.

Thanks for the suggestions. What are the advantages of a front loading machine? Also, why are Japanese top-loading machines (Hitachi , Panasonic) much cheaper than other top-loading machines from the likes of Miele, Brandt, Whirlpool, Candy? When I asked the store salesperson, he just said "because those are from Europe"

the front loaders use less water than the top loaders, and require less electricity

check out your space to establish what type of washer can fit into that space. and also determine what type of clothes (delicates etc)you are going to launder (see if your model functions for these type of clothes) and how much washing you want to do.

in my personal opinion, i would go for a front loader or a top loader. im not keen on the agitator type of washers.

yes i agree with crj about washer / dryer combo. it takes ages for the machine to process everything plus its more expensive to have it repaired...

LG or Samsung (they may be marketed as Tromm and another brand) are very well regarded, and will probably be cheaper than the US, European and other brands...

I have a washer dryer combo - and yes the dryer sucks...but I use the dryer to "jump start" the drying process when I line dry. I have to hang dry regardless, and so if it has a jump start, it dries faster.

Panasonic top loaders have a good range to select, which comes with all the options for the various type of washing ( eg. delicate, blanket , normal etc)and sizes.

Most of the Japanese brands are made locally or at least within Asia so overall cost is lower. Typically, European brand is imported from Europe, so cost is definitely higher.

I just remembered that I had used Maytag brand for washer & dryer in US which are big loaders and efficient.

My thoughts> best to stick to the popular brands (where you reside) so that servicing and spare parts are easily avail.
