Now TV Cricket Channel

It looks like the Cricket Channel won't be showing the World Cup (if today's SCMP is correct).

Apart from going to a pub - not really an option given that the games are all very early morning - what are the options for watching this at home? Sth African satellite isn't an option as I don't have space for a 1.8m dish in my rather small apartment.

Any ideas?

And what sort of Cricket Channel doesn't show the Cricket World Cup?

Calling ads ridiculous and calling a culture ridiculous are completely different things.

I think that the Hong Kong "Public service" ads that are bleated out on RTHK are ridiculous. Does this mean I am mouthing off about Hong Kong culture? Does this make me racist? It is my own opinion on the advertisements themselves (have you not seen the "Very Very Sexy" series of ads? They are ridiculous - and if you haven't seen them then you can't possibly comment).

The real point I was making up there (getting back on topic) was that if it was an Indian Sports feed, then it makes NO sense to show Indian ads but no Indian content (i.e. the Indian Cricketers playing cricket).

As you said, ads are meant to target a certain audience. Given that this is a cricket channel for Hong Kong subscribers, the fact that they play Indian ads (for products NOT available here) but not Indian cricket makes no sense.

If the Cricket Channel got Hong Kong companies to play local ads, then perhaps they could actually afford to put decent content on the channel. Take this to Speaker's Corner if you want to insinuate that my comments were racist, but please leave this thread for discussing Now TV's cricket channel.

ben the dog,

Absolutely agree with you!!!

We all(cricket lovers) all enjoy watching the cricket and will put up with many things. Deprived of sleep etc etc... to watch our favourite sport.

But the Now TV coverage is absolutely awfull, when you condider to insessant Indian ads they have at every break..."the ver very sexy" one of the worst!

I could understand if it was coverage of indian v whoever games but its NOT... England v Australia still has these loud and anoying ads!!! i just cant understand it!

Its not cheap either!! so it should be so much better coverage!!!

If NOW TV do not have the world cup coverage i will be cancelling my subscription contract or no contract... i will just cancel the card they are taking the funds from!!!

I think the worst ads of all are the ones that come up when a 50 or 100 or wicket occurs bannered accross the screen with the most silly screeming cartoon!!! Just Awfull!!!!!!!

cheers

the Don

Removed unacceptable comments about Indian programming due to a complaint... the complaint was also removed.

In any event I'd be more than happy to watch some uninteresting TV ads if it meant being able to pick up the upcoming NHL playoffs live...

Those ads are repetitive and LOUD, but thats ok as long as there were more cricket. It's called the CRICKET channel, how can a Cricket channel don't have the World cup? They charge between $120 to $168 a month just for the one channel. Madness!

I think I've I've been deceived by Nowtv, when I purchased the pacakage I specifically asked about the World Cup and the guy ensure me it was part of thier programme.

What can we do?

If you can prove that the guy lied (or even that you based your decision solely/principally on the incorrect information given at the time of purchase) then you could have a case for misrepresentation etc etc. But be warned that the laws (or at least the enforcement of them) on that sort of thing is somewhat lacking here in HK. Unless you have some sort of proof, though, you could be doing you-know-what into the proverbial wind.

Hi Ed - Two quick things without wanting to stray too far off topic:

1) Can whichever Ed deleted my comment explain how calling some of the Indian television advertisements "ridiculous" breached the T&Cs of the forums? Can do it via PM if that's easier.

2) mediazone.com has NHL from time to time I believe, have a look there and you might be able to get your fix.

To the others - Cricketon.tv has the world cup, but it's pretty expensive (about HK$1000 for the tournament to watch it on PC)

calling the Indian Ads ridiculous time and time again is not fair. They obviously appeal to millions of viewers in India.......that is why they were made, so are you calling all Indian viewers "ridiculous"? This is the thing, it may not appeal to you and they make no sense at all, but they were put in there for a reason...to target a certain people. The one who is to blame is the silly Broadband network who chose to give HK viewers the same feed that goes to India and not blanking out the ads as they do on the other Indian channels like Star plus/star news and Channel V India.

Well, you lot will have to learn to tune the ads out cos NOWTV WILL be showing the world cup.

They must have had too many complaints. I certainly emailed them about it.

Will they? Have you got a link? I rang them yesterday and the CS person had no clue whatsoever? Great news if they are showing it, but the hassle and short notice (esp for longtime subscribers) is a nuisance.

shamzyy: I can't make this any more clear. I called the Indian ads ridiculous, not Indian viewers (I note that The Don agreed with me up there ^^^). In the other cricket thread you said "Only in HKG do you have such a ridiculous set up..." - does this mean that you are calling all HKG people ridiculous? Of course not. Stop deliberately misinterpreting my words and stay on topic please.

Back to the cricket - does anyone know if it's going to be on 693, or whether they are opening another "special channel" for it?

the cricket channel on Now TV is produced by ESPN Star Sports. It costs money to put together and deliver a tv channel, and the subcription potential for a dedicated cricket channel in hong kong is simply not enough (there are not enough cricket fans in hong kong) for ESPN Star Sports to ever justify from a business perspective producing and delivering a cricket channel especially made for the hong kong market. However, in order to try and be of service, instead they let us see the channel that they produce for India. That is why you see the Indian ads. The incremental cost of doing this is quite low: to take out the ads would cost too much, they would have to re-do the schedule and put it on a different satellite in order to deliver the channel to PCCW from Singapore which is were they uplink it from. If anything we should think ourselves lucky we get any cricket at all.

btw, I do not work for ESPN Star Sports or PCCW (although I do work in the tv business)

The ads that you see are typical for the Indian market, in fact if anything they are above standard for that market.

I do see your point lyricstreet, and agree that the HK market is relatively small.

However, commonsense would dictate that they either put a low quality channel on for low cost, or a high quality channel on with a higher subscription cost.

What they are delivering is a substandard channel at a high cost.

Why not just pay SABC or SKY and get the excellent feeds from their sports channels? Admittedly, I don't pretend to understand the complicated licensing issues, but they seem to be making a hash of whatever they try to do with that channel.
