Hi all, I search on previous threads, but there doesn't seem to be many recent postings on traditional chinese confinement ladies/"pui yuet". Does anyone know of a good one in Hong Kong? The one my friend recommended is already booked up (probably due to the current baby boom). I'm not looking for a western midwife, but for someone who can cook all the traditional chinese foods and is aware of chinese traditions.

I used a traditional confinement lady last November & she was great. Only problem is she only speaks cantonese & putonghua. When are you due? What specifically did you want her to do?
Traditional confinement ladies take care of both mother & baby. Prepares all the meals & soups for the mother. You will be bombarded with 5-8 meals per day! All the herbal remedies needed for the mother's bathing.
They will also take care of the baby while you are resting. They are very experienced and know what they are doing. Just like western midwives.

i have never tried any of them. this shows that there are more confinement lady than you know in Hong Kong. hope this helps.
or you can buy any local pregnancy magazine from 7-eleven newstand, there are many advertisement on traditional confinement agencies in there.

Thanks very much!!! Vagabond can you let me know the details of your confinement lady. I should be able to get by with my basic cantonese and my mom. Did your confinement lady stay with you and help with the baby 24 hours and cook all the meals that you're supposed to have? That's really what I'm looking for. I'll also have a look at the magazines although was really hoping for a personal recommendation from someone....

Ms Cheung offers 3 packages : 8, 10 & 24 hours.
I chose 10hrs, coz I have 2 maids who were able to help me during the night. She came from 9am to 7pm.
I mainly used Ms Cheung to take care of me since I wanted to look after my baby personally.
She took really good care of me & knew all the soups & foods to cook. I had a c-section, so there are some things that you can & can't eat according to chinese tradition during confinement.
Ms Cheung also help look after the baby during the daytime & taught my helpers how to give baths, change & burp the baby.
Ms Cheung also bought all the ingredients & food from the market everyday for my meals.
She will cook according to your budget & taste.
Ms Cheung is in high demand & I know she has a job in April & June. You should give her a call and arrange for a meeting to further discuss & she if she is right for you.

I hired a confinement lady through the Methodist Group last Oct. You may check out this website (it's in Chinese though) http://www.labouraid.org/maternity/index.htm
Service coverage includes what vagabond mentioned. Once you've filled in the registeration form on the website, they will assign a lady who lives closest to your place to minimize the travelling cost. Then they'll arrange a face interview between you and the lady 3 months before your due date (depends on how urgent you need the lady of course). If you don't like her, they'll get your another one. Packages: 6, 7 or 8 hours; Mon - Fri/ Mon - Sat. Probation period: 7 days.
I am satisfied with their service. The lady takes good care of me and baby and my helper has learnt a lot from her on what to cook for me (she has now become my dietician!) and how to take care of baby.
