Hi: My family will be staying in Hong Kong over the holiday break and we would like to volunteer some time to a charity while we are here. Does anyone know of a soup kitchen or something that would allow us and our teenaged sons to come in and volunteer some time. We think this is an important life lesson for our sons to experience and We are eager to help others. This is what this season is all about.

Cheers,

I must say you are quite rare for Hong Kong. As a Westerner from NY it seems that very few people care to help others here and it takes a real effort to do so. It is simply part of the culture.

I commend you and your family for helping others.

There are a few organizations that are actually near Central including St. Barnabas' Society and Home in the Western District and Hong Kong Family Welfare Society. See this article from CNN from a few years back that provides helpful information on where you can help others over the holidays. http://travel.cnn.com/hong-kong/play/photos-inspire-spirit-giving-christmas-393928

I hope this information can guide you to one of them.

The South China Coast Community is a place for aged expats. They can always use some visitors. You can google to find the contact details.

The odds while not zero that immigration would deport someone or file charges for volunteering on Christmas or any other day is simply ludicrous. While the letter of the law is frequently cited it would require either the volunteering agency or someone else to verify your status. This would have to occur before undertaking the charitable activity and then reporting you after vounteering. I think most charities would be happy to have any warm body helping them or their activites and would not question your status for simply volunteering for a short period of time.

Great Family Value. My family used to do that in Ct. Post 911, many people reach out and extend compassionately. Wished i had seen this earlier, could have called some charities and even take you there personally.
