Our new daughter should be born in about three weeks time.

Dad is British, Mum is Hong Kong Chinese

Will she be british or chinese or both?

Can she claim a normal British passport as well as a permanent HKID card?

Is it a long process?

Thanks

If you are married then your daughter can claim a UK passport. If you are not married then it is a little more complicated. Your daughter's birth will be registered in HK so she will be eligible for HK permanent ID card. Your daughter is eligible for a SAR passport which I think makes her eligible for a kids ID card.

One quirk of the UK system is that as your daughter was born overseas, unless she goes to live in the UK (I think it is for 7 years) or marries a UK national she will not be able to pass UK rights to passport etc to her kids (your grandkids).

The processing time for a UK passport will only be a week or so but it is expensive as passports are only now issued from the UK so need to be sent to HK.

Topol, not quite right. If she has a child back in the UK then the child will be a British citizen. Not a quirk, similar to many other nationalities also.

You might also want to think about getting a HK passport for your kids, so you can get the China travel permit. This means whenever you go to China, your kids never need a visa.

you should be able to get a HKID since the baby is born in HK. then with dad being british the baby will also be able to get the british passport too - so you can be dual citizen.

the process would be quite long for the British passport i think. the HK one shouldn't take long.

congrats on the baby

When I got the British passport for my first child, it took three days. It was posted to my home three days after applying in person at the Consulate. For my second, it took about three weeks (in 2010). So maybe it depends on peak times etc. It takes two weeks to get a HK passport - you can post the application and then of course, you need to take your child when you collect the passport.

Prior to getting the passport, you need to prove that the child can get permanent ID card but I think you might be able to do it all at the same time. I think the certificate for permanent ID card comes with the birth certificate??? And then you fill out an extra form to get the ID card same time as passport.

If you want the China travel document, you can fill out the form from China Travel Service and then take it to any CTS, you need to queue and wait for a couple of hours. And then they can also post that to you within about three weeks.

British passport used to be quick, now all applications are sent back to UK so takes much longer.

The HKSAR passport and PRID card are applied for at the same time. Paperwork for passport comes with paperwork for ID card (non photo).
