Hi Lucas,
Cheapest way to travel from KL to SG is taking a coach. but considering it will take perhaps 6-8 hours, i don't see that as practical for kids. unless you get a coach with tv for each seat.
If i were you, I will take a budget flight. budget airlines serving the two countries will be air asia, tiger airways, jet star. if you book early, you can get really cheap tickets. the journey is about 1 hour.
newer attractions in singapore includes universal studios singapore in sentosa. i consider that kind of pricey, but it's worth it if you and your kids love taking rides. it can probably entertain any thrill seeker for the entire day. gardens by the bay is a new massive garden with plants from various parts of the world. it is absolutely boring for kids i think.
for accomodations, i recommend checking out agoda.com
there is a variety of hotels, from high to mid and low end featured on the website. while looking for hotels, note that geylang is an area in singapore that is considered the red light district. (i have friends visiting SG and ended staying there as accomodation is cheapest there)
expenses can be very subjective. a local meal can cost about S$4, fast food S$7. public buses and trains are affordable. gothere.sg is a great website to help you get around SG.
hope this helps for your trip to SG.
I am based in Singapore.
