Toddler Shoes for Wide Feet

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by Slammy 15 yrs ago
Hello,

I'm sure my daughter isn't the only toddler with fat wide feet. Does anyone have suggestions on the best shoe brands to go for, and where to buy these?

I've not had much success to date!

Thank you.

Just to add: even when I try to shop online, most of the HK shops only ask you to measure the length of the baby's foot... not the width!

We have the same issue. The only shoes that consistently fit our girls are Ecco. Very durable and they have good ankle support for the smaller kids, even on sandals.

The Ecco stores themselves have mostly adult models. You'll find the kids stuff are at Shoe Box in Ocean Terminal or Lee Gardens Two.

My son (4.5) has very wide feet too. Podiatrist said that Crocs were good at this age. In addition, new balance trainers are made wide.

Dr Kong is also very good and affordable. They will measure the foot length, wdith and arch

We went the Dr. Kong route for some shoes for our kids. They fit well but I think their soles are far too stiff and those nice finishes crack far too soon.

Crocs are said to be very good for the feet. However I guess I'm old fashioned so I think they're horrid. I won't let my kids wear Crocs apart from to the beach or to the pool, where in fact they are very practical. Practicality may have its place but I can find shoes that actually look nice and are just as good for the feet.

Yes, I think I would have to agree with you about the crocs - great for beach etc, but not as proper shoes. I also am not keen on stiff, thick soles. Because I'm a bit picky, I have to narrow my search to flexible soles for wide feet!

But yes, I've heard that New Balance does great shoes for wide feet - not sure if they make any for 1.5 year olds though? But I'll check those out.

Ages ago, I saw Jack and Lilly shoes seem to have great flexible soles, so now that the pollution has dropped, I think we can pop into Causeway Bay to check out City Super, for the Jack and Lily, and the Ecco shop you mention.

Thanks for your help!

Just a note that the summer collection from Ecco may not quite have arrived yet. It wasn't there two weeks ago. So pickings of summer shoes may be limited to a dwindling selection of last year's models. Ask in the store. Still, worth the visit.

My son of 21 months and also has a wide foot and high instep. I found a great selection of kids shoes at a shoeshop on The Peak. Its the only real shoeshop there carrying various brands (adults and kids). I've not been for a while so not sure whether summer collection there yet. However it was the only place I could find sandals in the late summer last year.

Another option is the TEVA shoes which are great to prevent smelly feet or sweaty feet which I bought from Harbour city on ground floor. Cant remember the shop name but its basically a large sports shop which carries many brands. Otherwise many kids shoe shops there you may find what you want.

I've also bought good wide shoes down Central Lanes - go down the first lane opposite H&M (where the lady sells the scarves at the top) and on the left side there's a shop with kiddies shoes outside, good selection of odds and ends there too.

I believe the only way to find a good fit is to bring your kid to the fitting.

Hope this helps.

If I go to the Peak, will it be easy for me to find the shop you're referring to?

I've looked down Central lanes but I wanted to buy, I guess, brand name shoes that have flexible soles yet good support. Well, I'll take another look next time I'm in Central.

Thanks!

"If I go to the Peak, will it be easy for me to find the shop you're referring to?"

Yes. It's in the Peak Galleria (opposite the tram), which isn't that huge. The middle floor of three if memory serves.

Footstop for Start-rite children's shoes, but I don't know where they have relocated.

My son has big, wide hobbit feet, and we've always struggled for shoes. Definitely recommend the TEVA sandals - you can get them in 'the' shoe shop in stanley, or from Marathon Sports almost anywhere. They are so lightweight and comfy he never whinges and they have lasted a long time. New Balance have a range of 'wide' trainers for kids, also from Marathon Sports.

Nike has good hi cut toddler shoes. My son has really wide feet and we also had difficulty looking for comfortable shoes with ample support for the ankles.

Is ankle support important for toddlers?

I thought it's important for them to have flexibility and room to move. It's not like my daughter is going to be playing basketball! :-)

Yes ankle is important according to various doctors I have spoken to. When I see toddlers with flip-flops or sandals without ankle support I have to restrain myself from rolling my eyes. Interestingly barefoot is fine, but with shoes ankle support is key.

Sure, they won't be playing basketball, but they're not so stable and the ankle easily bends in ways it should not.

That's one reason why I love Ecco so much. All their toddler sandals are "closed" in the back, giving proper ankle support.

It's an old post which I've just come across looking for something else, however, these vivobarefoot shoes might be suitable for children with wider than average feet - kidsfeet.webs.com - problem is there doesn't appear to be a very wide range of styles and sizes available.

Interesting! Thanks for that!

Or there is Stride-rite in Hong Kong. You might find the wide feet information on their web site interesting http://www.striderite.com.hk/

Thanks, I went to their shop in Discovery Bay and was disappointed with the selection and the fact that there wasn't actually a great deal of wide-sized shoes!

There is a lady on Lantau selling vivobarefoot shoes for kids but like Runner said, she has only a limited range, not a lot of choice of styles, colours and sizes, but what she has available is ok. Apparently this is a one-off consignment she brought into Hong Kong and she does not intend to bring in any more of this brand. I bought some for my children. Supposedly they are much cheaper than if bought overseas, however, they still cost over HK$200 a pair

There is a Clark's shoe shop on Nathan road near the Pnni sula on the pop side. It has toddlers Clark's shoes they only have width fitting G which is wide. You can also call bumps to Banes in Ap Lei Chau as they have a better stock than there central branch they have Start Rite again. If she has a wide foot you should be looking at G width.

Try out this brand of kids shoes called Little Blue Lamb as well. I've bought a couple of pairs from this website www.lepetitsociety.com and it provides both the length and width of the shoes so it wasn't that difficult to shop. I like the quality of the shoes as they are made with leather and look stylish enough for more dressy wear..

The first Vivobarefoot shoes I bought were delivered by a lady fitter who came to my home (in Tai Koo Shing) with several pairs of shoes I wanted, around the size I asked for, and fitted them there and then. A further pair of shoes I ordered a few days later were sent to me by mail as the correct size had already been checked by the fitter. They are not width-fitted however, which in my children's case wasn't an issue.
