Posting photos of people in public places

ORIGINAL POST

Does anyone know whether it is illegal to take photos or videos of people in public places (for example, a photo of someone coming out of a restaurant, store or other public establishment) and posting their image to a public website?

I assume this should be legal given these people are in a public place, but just wanted to double check. Thanks!

Amestris, sorry, but you are jumping to conclusions and casting judgment without information.

For everyone else, if you have any ideas on my original question, would be great to hear from you!

i wouldn't think it's illegal, reporters take photos of celebrities, politicians etc without asking first and then publish them in magazines and websites don't they?

Ametris, advice was being sought to determine whether or not such a thing is allowed in Hong Kong.

This does NOT mean he has been snapping photos for a long period of time then decided to see if it was okay out of a guilty conscience.

Do not reprimand people who you think are committing unlawful acts. Most ask with reverence to HK laws and quite politely. Your response is one of the reasons people here hesitate to be open with a concern in fear of an accuser like yourself.
