You're right in that there are an overwhelming number of choices for TESOL courses online. The key, though, is that only some of them will be useful if your wife wants to find reliable work - especially if there is any chance of her looking for this kind of work in Australia - and there is a huge market for language teaching at universities in Australia - the international student market is massive and many of these students are put in pathway TESOL programmes prior to acceptance into mainstream uni studies. Basically the CertTESOL or the Cambridge ESOL equivalent CELTA are the only certificates accepted worldwide. If you plan to stay here long term and your wife look for work at British Council or at universities you'll need one of these. They also differ from online courses as the teaching practice is assessed and compulsory on the CertTESOL/CELTA.
There is a lot of choice - but the relative cost of the CertTESOL/CELTA is there for a reason...they are very useful courses and you can take them almost anywhere.
