My sister inlaw is keen to come to HK to work as domestic helper and she is going to apply from an agent in the Philippines. This will cost her at least Php. 70,000.00 and a chance of landing a bad employer. If I hire her directly, it will only cost her Php. 6,000.00 but me and my husband don't need a helper. I am planning to hire her anyway and train her to cook, clean, etc. during the first 2 months then she can find another employer. Please share your thoughts about this.
Thank you.

If you intend to keep her for 2 months or so, in order to train her, this will mean that after 2 months you will either have to terminate her employment, or she will have to resign. Either way, to a prospective new employer, it doesn't look very good if she has only been employed by her first employer for 2 months. Even with a good reference from yourself, if I was looking for a new helper, I probably wouldn't consider someone who had resigned, or been terminated after such a short period ... I would wonder why? I'm sure others will no doubt feel differently though ... these are just my thoughts.

Also any reference you gave as a relative, would not be too believable to any prospective employer, she would find it more difficult to be hired by someone else.

@ Sapphire and Susie. Exactly what I would be thinking if I was the prospective employer. But it will be in the open, no secrets. I'd rather hire a helper that's been trained already than hiring from an agency.
