How much does it cost to give birth in Hong Kong?

Can anyone give advice on the cost of delivery in Hong Kong? It seems delivering at private hospitals costs an arm and a leg. I'm trying to see how costs can be managed - is it possible to have antenatal care at a public hospital and then deliver at a private hospital? I know private hospitals only take private doctors for delivery, so does this mean I need at least one antenatal visit with a private doctor so he can book me into a private hospital?

Or vice versa - it is possible to have private antenatal care but deliver at a public hospital with whoever their public hospital doctor is? How does one go about registering to deliver at a public hospital? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi, there have been lots of threads on this in the past. Would suggest that you do a search on "private" and "public". It is possible to see a private doctor for antenatal and then deliver at the public hospital with the public hospital doctor who is on duty at the time. My friend did this and estimated the private specialist visits pre-birth at around $15K. I went private as had insurance so can't advise on the process to register at the public hospital but I have seen threads on this before. Not sure about public antenatal visits and delivery at a private hospital. I have been told that at the moment some of the popular private doctors are so busy that some are not taking on patients who are not going to deliver at a private hospital.

Costs at a private hospital differ a lot depending on which one, method of delivery and whether there are complications etc. My delivery was around $100K (ie: not including pre-natal specialists visits) including hospital costs, specialist etc - 3 day stay. Friends paid over $200K for the birth as had complications.

Good luck

If you have ID, why not go public, if you live in an area that has access to one of the good hospitals, such as Queen Mary.

I think, excluding ante-natal care, that you would need to spend at least $30K to have a baby in a private hospital. It`s all grossly overpriced and very much a business. When I was looking around, I would have seriously considered a public hospital if it weren`t for the fact that I didn`t have HKID and it would have actually cost more or the same as a private hospital.

I decided on delivering in China where I`m living, but due to a probably transfer next month, might end up in labour on the doorstep of some unlucky public hospital without HKID sometime in January!

Good luck - there are sooo many options to choose from - it`s a real market. have fun looking around.
