I was told by my doctor to continue taking 1,500 mg/day of metformin until the 14th week of pregnancy (due to PCOS and the higher risk of miscarriage), and am a little nervous about taking this medication during the first trimester. Should I be overly concerned?

hello,
i have PCOS too, I was told by doc in NY, my situation is pretty bad, I was put on metformin for a month (should be six, but i stopped) to try to have kids...
and now my doc put me on Utrogestan as my corpus lutuem is below average size (part of the reason is due to PCOS).
I am not a doc (apparently), but do you know your doc well? maybe should get a second opinion or something if you are extremely worried!

I took metformin until the 14th week of my pregnancy and like you i was concerned until i spoke to my Dr about it. Dr Choy sent me about 6 web links to scientific studies of pregnant women on pco meds during their first trimesters and after reading the info i was put at ease. Our 7mth old girl is healthy we had no side effects of the metformin, from what i read there is actually little risk. Talk to your dr about it and ask for any research info on it. You don't want to add any undue stree to your pregnancy. All the best.
