Swollen fingers during pregnancy

ORIGINAL POST

Hi. I'm almost 8 months pregnant and recently, my fingers have become very swollen to a point where it's painful to make a fist. It's difficult to grasp things, twist bottles, etc. I know it helps to cut back on salt but does anyone have suggestions to east the discomfort? Any advice would be appreciated!

Shadow, are your ankles swollen too? If this keeps up, it's best to visit the doctor. You don't want to have pre-enclampsia, which is a real problem. Best to have it checked by an expert. Having said that, do not be alarmed - it's a very common occurence in pregnancy. Just go get some professional advice as you don't want to mess around with something like this.

Agree with all of the above....I had heaps of fluid and had trouble closing my fist as well. I got it just towards the end (2 weeks before). But in saying that your appointments to the doctor should be weekly now so ask him to check the fluid next time you see him. Always good to get these things checked and you will have peace of mind.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. My ankles are not swollen yet, just my fingers for now. But I will try and drink more fluids and do more light walking.

Davo, you're so great giving your wife massages every night! I'll have to suggest it to my hubby!

Swollen fingers are very common during pregnancy, and is often at its worst in the morning. Unfortunately this is part and parcel of pregnancy, and normally only improves after the delivery. Doing some finger excercise (stretching , opening and closing the hands) may help the drainage of some of the fluid, and ease the discomfort. Some physiotherapy may also be helpful.

I am continually surprised at what questions are asked here. Not the case in this thread, but sometimes rubbish advice is given.

As everyone suggests, issues like these require a qualified response from an Obstertrician.

I was thinking, at 8 months, as gabercro asks, ren't you visiting your Obst quite frequently? If you do not use an Obst (!?), then at least your doctor.

Nonothing, I have been seeing my OB and he says in my case, the swelling was normal. Nothing to worry about. But he didn't have many good suggestions on how to make them feel better. My original intent on posting this thread was to try and get some advice on how to ease the discomfort for my final weeks of pregnancy. Like maybe old family remedies, etc. None the less, thanks for all your suggestions anyway.

Shadow I am only 23 weeks and have awfully swollen ankles, feet and even calves (not fingers though!!)! My OB said my BP and urine check (for sugar/protein or whatever it is they check for)is fine and all I can do is as above, rest and avoid salty foods and he also mentioned avoiding sugary foods as well. I dread to think how I'll be at 8 months!

Sue, I feel for you! I've also heard that putting your hand above your head while doing the finger exercises may help as well as massaging fingers and feet. Good luck to you!

Be careful too of the foot massages you get as I have heard and read that some of the pressure points on your feet can cause uterine contractions...you won't want to stimulate them right about now.

Pregnant here too...swollen fingers at times as well. :)
